The reviewers seem to be saying the performers are greatly elevating the material.
Regretfully give it a few months before it throws in the towel. A shame as it was a fun evening.

The curtain call photos are very spoilerish.

"It’s terrible. And it shoulda been left in turnaround after years of kicking around agency offices, instead of being offered up for sacrifice in this $7 million vanity production. Oh, the things we do for love…"
This quote is pretty nasty. Is he referring to NPH?

genuine question: is this the kind of show that is so bad that I might have a good time laughing at it? Or it really just something to stay away from? I'm debating whether to rush it for the sake of the killer cast (I've never seen Daly or Boggess in any shows). I've already seen most of the must-see shows this season.

DEADLINE"
Probably refer to DHP.

It seems like its one of those shows where the critics are mixed because it is thin, but the audiences genuinely enjoy it

He's refering to DHP's husband having written the book and lyrics. That is one snotty if hilarious review. "Barbara Anselmi’s melodies made me miss Frank Wildhorn. No, seriously...As with steam-table victuals, the jokes may be lousy but there are plenty to go around...So much talent, so little show." Ouch.

I wouldn't call most reviews so far pans. Most are fairly mixed, with praise for the cast and directing, and disapproval of the score and general concept, with the book getting some notices both ways.

I rarely post on this board, but I felt compelled to post about that Deadline review. It isn't just nasty, it's vitriolic. I can't believe he's bringing the personal lives of people into this, and then uses that information to make additional jabs at the creative team. It goes into gossip magazine territory.
I haven't read such an unprofessional review like that in ages. There's a way to say what he wants to say with class and professionalism. He should be fired.

Actually, Jeremy Gerard writes for Deadline now, so he is totally entitled to write that kind of stuff. It's not Bloomberg.

Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't know. I thought that he was insinuating that NPH had put money into the show to get the hubby a job.

Dexter, many if not most of the notices have mentioned the connection between the writer and director, just as the Hunchback reviews mentioned that the director was the lyricist's son. There's nothing untoward about that.

I'm going out on a limb and predicting that, against all odds, this is going to be a hit. They have pull quotes galore and it screams of matinee ladies and groups. Absolutely no snob appeal but I don't think it's going to need it. We'll see.

^ They haven't been doing well so far, so I think you are wrong. Crowds will not suddenly appear.

Don't be so sure, Roxy, because there are plenty of pull quotes from those reviews for a TV ad. The little show that coulda might actually do some business for a while, especially if American in Paris and Neverland become hard tickets without discounts.

Pull quotes mean nothing ask Side Show - Honeymoon In Vegas - On The Town - and they got great reviews. The only thing that could save this is the most Tony nominations in the history of the awards and I'd wager they will get none.

That would be a pretty bad wager considering Lisa Howard is almost guaranteed a nomination after these reviews. Also, don't be surprised if Tyne Daly snags a featured actress spot.

"Huh? I would say treachout in WSJ is a devastating pan. Hardly mixed. Other reviews are mixed, saying funny in a sit come way and some saying it coulda been worse. Will these bring in money at the box office. Time will tell."
IT COULDA BEEN WORSE. They should slap that all over the ads.

In what review does Lisa Howard get substantial mention that would "guarantee" her a Tony nomination? While I'm a big fan of Howard's, I just don't think it's going to happen for her (or anyone) with this show. If anyone, Daly seems the most likely.

"^Let's see if Brantley will even be reviewing the show..."
Maybe not but I bet he does "Finding Neverland" which opens tomorrow.
