"I know Brantley isn't the most beloved here, but man - I really do enjoy a good Brantley panning. "
Agreed. Been awhile.

The Little Mermaid will forever be my favorite Brantley pan: "Loved the shoes. Loathed the show. Ok, I exaggerate. I didn't like the shoes all that much." If I were a TLM producer, I would have just stopped reading. He's so on point though.

"Brantley's review is up and it ain't pretty

For Brantley, that's not too nasty. Almost like he couldn't be bothered to be nasty. Oh, it's clear that he didn't like it. But there wasn't the "stay away from this" kind of venom he can sometimes unleash. Like this one: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/03/theater/reviews/03good.html

Nothing like saying you are interested in theater and than revel when a critic on his high horse destroys a show . Barrel of laughs. /

The truth hurts - these shows had it coming it to them. Theater fans should absolutely be capable of creating their own opinions about shows; my opinions happen to match Brantley's in all of these instances, so yes - I'm satisfied and will revel with his review.

How critical does NBC New York usually get? I haven't read any of their reviews and it's true that tastes differ but I find it a little suspect that Gigi and It Shoulda Been You can both pull good quotes from NBC.

He actually wasn't even that mean. To me, it just sounded like he didn't like how a lot of the stuff in the show has been done before. It doesn't sound like he hated it. Everything was just blah average to him

It's still a pretty clear pan though- unlike some of the other reviewers, he didn't even have very kind words for the performers. But given the reception of the show from people here, I'm not surprised at the mixed-negative reviews.

It's not reveling its seeing justice done. Shows like this can not be encouraged. Think of what that cast could have done with decent material. It's another version of belly button gazing, insiders encouraging insiders to put something in their theaters.

Every so often, Roxy, a show comes along as to which a theatre lover must revel in its critical destruction. That would be true in this case even were one riding Thumbelina. The only other point I'd make is that the review is not ipso facto destroying the show. E.g., the very show that was "critically destroyed" almost a century ago (as cited by Brantley in this very review) that was not "destroyed."

If you ask me, I think the best chance this show could possibly have at the Tonys is David Hyde Pierce presenting both directing awards.

Not surprised to see Brantley's review. What surprises me is that this show got here at all. Although there have been some changes/additions to the the show since I saw it in 2011, it's sounds as though it's the same tired evening of cliches, with a "twist" that seems even more ridiculous today. A total waste of time, talent and money.

Eh. It's Crap on Broadway. It's not the first piece of Crap on Broadway. It won't be the last piece of Crap on Broadway. Moving on.
I think I'll focus today on this season's really good musical, Fun Home, and really good play, Hand To God.

There is no "truth" when it comes to a matter of opinion and taste.
Personally, I could think of way worse shows running right now. Many which opened this season. I didn't think it was a good show by any means, but the talent involved certainly helped make it an enjoyable evening. I think Adam Feldman's review pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I agree, it is clear that he did not like it but at least he was not incredibly mean.

I think it could run. There are enough good quotes (AP, USA Today) to make decent ads, and it seems tailor-made for theater parties. The night I saw it, the audience appeared to be having a good time.
It seems like many of this season's new shows are dark (FUN HOME, THE LAST SHIP, THE VISIT) so maybe a light piece of froth like this can find an audience.
FWIW, I enjoyed it way more than THE LAST SHIP, which I found to be a deadly bore.

Nothing like saying you are interested in theater and than revel when a critic on his high horse destroys a show .
Two things which really have nothing to do with each other. Brantley wasn't the only negative review and writing any sort of review does not constitute his being on a "high horse". I don't always agree with his reviews, but I've never seen any evidence of inflated ego more than that of any other major critic reviewing today. What is it about his reviews that specifically stands apart from everyone else in the business? What is it that makes your grudge so personal?

In my OPINION...yes, it's not FACT...I think It Shoulda Been You is the absolute worst show of the season and possibly worst show I've ever seen on Broadway. May it die a quick death.
Also I really liked The Last Ship.
