It wan't just a single note. The entire song made my ears hurt. I've never heard her before, and I was mystified how she can be performing on Broadway at all. I'm actually glad to learn that this wasn't up to her usual standard. I'll chalk it up to the demanding conditions of the performance.

Happens all the time with these high profile performances and as far as notes go, it is one of the more important ones to get right if you can. It is highlight reel news today and in 24 hours or so no one will be talking about it.

I feel bad for this poor woman. Her throat has been raped by composers for years and sadly now another throat wrecker is added to her repertoire that people will expect to hear at her Pops concerts up until she dies. The songs that are written for her are insane and they are a few throat wreckers in If/Then. The woman must be exhausted hopping all over the country world performing the same damn songs. The voice does get tired and worn especially when jumping through hoops. Someone had the nerve to say that Marin Mazzie always sings perfectly and I was like "uh, yes and she barely works. She gets lots of rest." Idina is having to capitalize on this success and its got to be killing her. She's on a treadmill that doesnt stop.

To piggyback off of the last comment, Idina, like many other Broadway performers, has had a very busy performance schedule these last 2 weeks. I'm constantly amazed by how much she manages to squeeze into each day/night. For someone with a strong but fragile voice like hers, it was only a matter of time. I hope she takes some rest now that the holidays are over. Hopefully she can do a little less promoting and just relax back into her normal weekly schedule.

You're acting as if she's employed by the US Government to continue on performing forever and ever, regardless of whether or not it's healthy. Idina is CONTINUING to work and CONTINUING to accept work that is damaging to her. It's not as if she NEEDS the work either, she is doing this by will.
I definitely have a problem with those justifying her performance by saying "it's in the cold," "she's tired!" "some people have bad performances," etc. In no way was her performance justifiable. Nobody is expecting her to go above and behind. Personally, I would just like her to continue to accept roles/perform songs that rest in her comfort zone. I feel rather cheated when it's a hit or miss on whether or not she's going to perform a song SHE knows is difficult for her vocals at this point in her career. A lot of these appearances are due to Frozen and I'm more than positive Disney is almost forcing her to accept them, however, there truly is NO way to excuse this.
I think Idina is amazingly talented and has accomplished spectacular things in her career. However I don't think this career move best suits her as a person. There are many many MANY performers that are even more talented than her and not nearly as famous who are doing DOUBLE of what she's been doing between If/Then and Frozen promo. She is not superwoman for what she is/has been doing. I don't think it's fair to pretend as if she's living an impossible life so these poor performances are A-OK. I think it must be a hell of a stressful schedule, but this is what she is choosing for herself and I'm not going to stand by and justify it just because I'm a fan of her previous works.

It was one iffy performance. Overall, I think she sounds healthier than she's sounded in a long time. Especially for doing as much as she's doing.

The people saying "she doesnt have to accept the jobs" are probably not in the entertainment field. She's been a working actress for many years and a Tony guarantees nothing. She's tried forever to break through and it hasnt been successful, even with a Tony and the fervent Wicked fans. She has current worldwide name recognition and she knows how fickle this biz is. She needs to make some money now and stay visible. If/Then will be closing soon. A year from now, she can rest all she wants if the phone stops ringing. She knows how valuable this time is.

@Bettyboy72 - I've worked with Feld Entertainment, Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Bros., Mardi Gras Crews, Disney, AND I now co-own a successful circus production company here on the West Coast. I've also worked with lots of professional (equity) theatrical productions from LA to New York. So, I think I've been in the entertainment field long enough. Thanks!

Idina has a very short shelf life for this level of popularity, and she is trying to exploit it so she can leverage it for something more.

I think YOU missed my point...I wasn't saying she can't have off days. I'm just asking, at what point do we stop pushing these "off days" aside and making a billion and one excuses for them? Nobody is satisfied with just saying "that was a bad performance." People always try to justify it with one thing or another.
EDIT: And when I said cheated, I mean by the song itself. The fact that I'm not really sure if she can sing it as recorded live. Even on the Jimmy Fallon performance, the song was lowered. The only similar performance I can think of was the CMA Christmas special. I can't recall whether or not that had been lowered or not.

Eh. You know what, she sounded perfectly fine when I saw If/Then in June, and from what I've heard/read, her track record for the show vocally continues to be swell. If she's still giving good, HEALTHY performances on a daily basis, then I can't really fault her for one mistake.
Last night was a slip-up, and no one will even care a couple weeks from now. Many "pop stars" mess up or have embarrassing moments on live television, and this is no different.

Saw her in If/Then on the 27th. Sounded incredible. A little raspy in places, but incredible overall. Plus, she's definitely known for having a somewhat raspy voice.
I won't lie, her performance on New Year's Eve was not great by any means.It wasn't the worst thing I've ever heard. I'm glad she's jazzing it up a little bit in places so it doesn't sound the same every single time. I'm just trying to justify it. There's nothing wrong with trying to justify a poor performance. ^ I agree. And obviously you have to justify some things to keep it realistic. However, I just don't understand the excuses of "her voice hasn't been great these past years" or "Let it Go and the If/Then score are torturous to sing."

I agree. You can't say something is torturous to sing. Some songs simply sit better with certain performers. I don't think Idina should be singing Let It Go in its original key. She probably rehearsed the song a bunch back during filming and nailed it. However, now, she should be singing it in the lower key. Someone like Willemijn Verkaik could probably sing it day after day with no problem. It just sits more comfortably in her range.
I don't think anyone is saying the If/Then score is extremely difficult to sing in terms of its range. However, I will say Idina is on stage A LOT in that show. She is also switching back and forth between two renditions of the same character for over 2 and a half hours. She must go from one story to another and revert back to a mindset from a previous scene instantaneously. It's not the easiest role to do I'm sure.
That being said, I haven't really heard too many complaints regarding her voice in the show. From what I hear, she's holding up well. Someone I know saw the show recently and said she's even better now that when she started the run.

You're missing half the picture because, yes, nobody is satisfied with just saying it was a bad performance: Many of the critics immediately follow up with a "she's terrible" or "she can't sing" or whatnot. It's only natural the other side tries to balance that out, especially anyone who understands a Broadway schedule. (Twitter is a truly horrible place, though.)
Since Menzel raised the key for the sake of a one-shot film studio recording, she can lower the key and shouldn't be criticized for that, but that also does happen. I think part of the reasoning for lowering in CMA was to help out her duet partner, Nettles, but that's just my guess. Incidentally, that's been my favorite performance of LIG anywhere, but I really like duets.

By no means is she a terrible performance or actress. She's a very engaging performer - as evident by this thread. It's just interesting that two major performances - the Oscars (which wasn't that bad) to this (which was weird and off from beginning to end) - have been so inconsistent.
A lot of performers are under the same duress. Maybe not performing on Michael and Kelly, but singing for Telsey at 10am, etc. It's the job you signed-up for. You're promoting your album, etc. You should be on your A game. She's famous enough she could hire a very good vocal teacher to teach her how to sing those notes.

I really hope that she takes the song down a step for her concert tour. Like how she sometimes starts "Defying Gravity" in a lower key, it will have the same power belt impact but help her voice. She probably could mix the final note if she wanted to (she uses her mix well on the If/Then OBCR) but she chooses the full belt, which has great impact although it is not always perfect. I think her response to this has been perfect and classy with honesty. She's incredibly talent and, given her success, seems to have a great work ethic. She's become a household name and "Let It Go" has been a MAJOR part of that.

Personally I think that the song minus the ending note wasn't bad at all. I too like that she jazzed it up a little. I could tell her voice was getting raspy around the bridge. I'm a singer so I definitely understand how it can be. She tried and gave it her all!
Plus it is not to be taken lightly that she was singing in that INSANE chilly weather. I've sung in that type of weather before and lost my voice almost instantly, the human voice is a sensitive instrument so I applaud her for even sounding that good.
Now factor in how many shows she does (If/Then is not an easy vocal show for her either), the travel, and the insane amount of promo she's done recently and I think it's not fair to vilify her for a botched note. I agree she could use some pointers on technique to make the note easier, but overall I think she's doing a fine job.

She should always have a pre-recorded apology before performing, reminding everyone how hard she works, the details of her weekly schedule and that 75% is just fine with her.

Let's not forget that a pro like Megan Hilty sang in WORSE weather conditions on NYE, outside, different year-same show and nailed the performance. 'Let Me Be Your Star' is no walk in the park vocally.... And she stepped up and knocked it out of the park. That's her job.
I don't buy Idina's excuses or her fangirl support. I've seen her live WIcked (London, Broadway), in concert and in Rent. She's always been a 50/50 vocalist. Her London run of Wicked introduced me to Kerry Ellis, who I hoped to see more of on that run (and did). She can outsing Menzel and has a better instrument all the way around.
