I've never met anyone who was perfect at their job 24/7, especially with conditions that challenge what you do for a living. It also makes me laugh at the amount of people here saying how much they dislike her and yet STILL watch videos of her. I'm not her biggest fan by any means, so I didn't watch her. It's as easy as that.
Could it be that her vocal technique and her voice aren't made for this extremely difficult song? Willemijn Verkaik seems to have the right chops for it as it sounds live as good as on cd. It seems to me that Idina is destroying her voice more and more because of a wrong technique. Greetings from Germany.
To me, Idina's singing voice has always been an acquired taste and I'm just not quite there yet. This particular song exposes a portion of her range that is not exactly soothing to the ear. She's gone shrill in a not so good way before but not like in this song, including the recording for the soundtrack. The problem is her nasally delivery which sounds like a 43-yr old woman impersonating a 12-yr old girl whose voice lacks the maturity to tackle such a demanding number. The cold weather didn't help matters either at her most recent outing. I worry that this song is going to turn into Idina's albatross akin to AITYING for Jennifer Holiday and JHUD to a lesser extent. I am happy however that she's getting her shine on regularly.
Did you actually hear Megan Hilty perform "Let me be you star", BN2? That was for from "nailed that performance"... she was struggeling, too!
And it's quite stupid to say that 75% is enough for Idina. That's clearly not what she meant. What she said is that even if you give 100 percent you'll never be perfect and you don't have to be. So judging her by saying she is lazy and doesn't even want to do the job right is just plain wrong!
In the real world the only people who burst into song are the hopelessly deranged...
"This is not the first time she's screwed the song up while singing it live. So, the excuses of a show schedule, the cold, etc are all moot."
Depends on what reasons were used to explain her only other big live performance, Oscars, which anyone reasonable can accept was an other ball of wax.
I don't get the "vocal technique" comments. The Lopezes have said that they wrote LIG specifically for Menzel, though certainly many others can sing it, as evidenced by the official international versions. She has been singing this way since at least 1996, probably earlier since her wedding singer days, has pro training, and hasn't destroyed her voice like people have claimed despite the different off/Broadway shows she's been in*. I think it comes down to a matter of taste, this poor performance notwithstanding; Menzel's high belt doesn't send me into orgasms the way it does to some, nor does it puncture my spleen the way it does to others (really love her chest register, though). To say she has poor technique or can't sing or whatever is rather ludicrous, as she wouldn't continue to be cast in various projects for such a long time.
*I think her voice has changed with age, actually, when comparing from her RENT days and now. Women often lose the top couple of notes and gain at the bottom after a certain period of time (have to find that reference again).
I am honestly so sick of all of these excuses. She may be human but come on, guys! There are SO many more talented people that could nail Let It Go every single day without a problem. I saw the 75% tweet. She's just making excuses for her poor technique, and her fans (for some reason) are saying it's perfectly fine. I get that people say she's classically trained but something slipped up somewhere in there.
Her voice is an...acquired taste, definitely, I just can't take that raspy sound. Even just her chest voice is too nasally for me, but her belt is like torture. I wish SJB was the original Elphaba, like she was supposed to be.
She needs to retrain her voice, something is up in there. She definitely has the money to pay for an amazing voice teacher, but she seems so cocky she probably thinks she doesn't need it.
And someone said something about after If/Then closes she can take a rest, she's going on a world tour next year. I'll avoid those cities like the plague so my eardrums stay intact. In the end, stop making excuses for her. There are many artists who are WAY more talented than Idina Menzel, and have worked harder to get where they are.

Megan Hilty has come to Idina's defense on Twitter:
Megan Hilty @meganhilty: I'm really disappointed & frankly pissed off at the ****ty comments made by people in our industry over Miss Menzels NYE performance and how she chose to gracefully deal with such unwarranted backlash by people who have considerably less than 75% of her talent or success the best dancers fall and the best singers crack. At least they're doing it LIVE.
Also... Not to start a whole "She's better than... " debate, but where some people succeed effortlessly, others have to do some work. Someone said that Kerry Ellis can out sing Idina any day. That may be true. Kerry has a very strong, heavy voice. However, I would MUCH rather watch Idina act the role of Elphaba over Kerry. I've seen them both play the role on more than one occasion. Kerry is dead behind the eyes. That being said, you can't deny she has a fantastic singing voice. My point again is, where one easily succeeds, another may not. This is not me saying Idina is not succeeding. Her daily/nightly television promo performances have been fantastic lately. However, unless you're a big fan of hers, you're probably not watching those. You're probably just watching the huge events (like the Oscars or New Year's Eve). Idina does not have the broad range that many expect her to have (quite possibly even herself), but there is definitely a unique, raw, mesmerizing quality about her.
OK--Finally decided to listen to this performance of a song/singer that I have previously made a comment. The crowd was having a great time, she looked stylish, moved around, found her spots but missed the money shot [by a long way].
Perhaps a better response should have been more humorous saying 'I really fv.ked up that last note-think Adele Dazeem took over at the end'.
I think she should be able to sing the song since she recorded it but I think a lot of people are being really mean to Idina. The theatre community needs to stick together and support each other. I'm disappointed that many people are bashing her. Someone referenced Megan Hilty. She sang let me be your star i think three years ago? The point is she cracked on the last note. Megan Hilty is literally amazing and has had a lot of amazing live performances. So has idina. Idina may always struggle with Let It Go. Who knows at this point. She is HUMAN.
I wonder if it's nerves because of a larger audience? I've never gotten to see her live, but many most accounts, she always knocks it out of the park, but most of the time when she sings something on tv I don't think she sounds that hot.
I'm on her side. The holiday schedule for Broadway performers is a bear, she's been doing a ton of promotion for her album, etc. No, the performance was not great, but so what? At least she didn't cancel...
Well, let it go...the truth does hurt and she knows it. Her performance was rough and vocally sloppy and not being a fan she always seems to be straining her voice with her screeching belt.
"Anything you do, let it it come from you--then it will be new."
Sunday in the Park with George
I actually don't think it was all that bad. I do understand the criticism though, but that comes with the territory when you're working in the public eye.
She's a great actress and singer no doubt, and yes, sometimes the circumstances of the performance do get the better of her BUT it cannot be denied that her voice is not always the strongest. She suffered from vocal issues (was it nodules?) during her run in Wicked, has always had quite a husky voice and it DOES have a tendency to crack a lot.
