Do you think there will there be a lyric change in "For Now" when it says "George Bush!" after Bush leaves office? It sounds like a stupid question but because Avenue Q takes place in present day, I wonder.
On a side note, is Avenue Q doing well enough to last much longer? I'm awful at keeping up with how well shows are doing.

Yup. I talked to Robert McClure, who is in the touring cast of Avenue Q. He said that they will leave it for a month or so after the election, when it will have the most effect. The director already knows what the lyric change will be, but he is keeping it on the low, apparently.
And I've been wondering as well just how long it will last.

Posted: 3/24/08 at 1:08pmIt's not a dumb question. I've wondered this myself! From what I've seen, the show seems to be doing pretty well. Only time can tell what will happen!

I always thought it would sound good as something like:
Only for now
Sex
Is only for now
Your hair
Is only for now
George Bush
Was only for now

Why not just change it to whoever is in office?
Because the new president might be... good.

Just please, please, please don't let it be "McCain is only for now."

I would honestly be shocked if it made it to the inauguration on January 20.
My gut tells me this will close around Labor Day.

I agree, Calvin. McCain is going to do a fantastic job when he's elected, so it would really be in bad taste--heck it wouldn't even make any sense--if they said "McCain is only for now" as if it were a good thing. We'll wish he could be president forever!

I understand they plan to change it to:
"Wicked" is only for now!

"Because the new president might be... good."
But would it really be Avenue Q's style to be postive about ANY president?
With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

Only if facism sweeps the nation the same way American Idol has...oh wait!

TonyVincent, I hope you were being sarcastic about McCain being a good president. If not then all I can say is WOW.
That being said, I don't think that they will say george bush WAS only for now. The whole point of the song is that no matter what in life is bad it is only for now, its temporary and it isn't going to last forever. Many people consider Bush being in office to be a bad thing hence the lyric. If and when the Dems win I think the creative team at Q would consider that a good president.

I heard through the grapevine that when the show closes, it may be changed to, "This show is only for now."
I don't anticipate it closing anytime soon, though. It's got healthy attendance in the 70th and 80th percentiles, sometimes lower and sometimes consistently higher, and it's still a crowd favorite. Often times if I'm talking about theatre to non-theatrical people, they'll remark, "Oh, have you seen Avenue Q? It's the only show I've seen, it's hysterical." It's still a tourist and crowd pleaser, and I don't anticipate a closing notice in the TOO near future.

Even if it does close before the election, wouldn't they have to change it for amateur productions?
ps: I like the 'Wicked' idea! :)

I wonder this every time I listen to the recording!
I don't think they'll change it to the new president right away, though. Regardless of whether or not the people behind Avenue Q like the new president, they need time for public discontent to build up. It won't be very funny one month into the presidency because (hopefully) the president won't have had time to really piss off the public.

The joke doesn't necessarily have to be about the president. They could do something like "The declining value of the US Dollar against major foreign currencies... is only for now"
That'll get a chuckle. Maybe. Probably not.

hopefully!
plus "George Bush" flows well with the song because it's only two syllables.
all of the 2008 candidates have names with 3 or more syllables.
