If spongebob had down well what do you think Nickelodeon would have done on broadway next? Are there any other cartoons that you think would translate to the stage well? Do you think that nick would have become more like Disney with broadway and release more musicals based of different property’s?

It might, still.

But to answer your question: nothing.  I didn't care about THIS being made into a musical.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

They wouldn't have done anything. SpongeBob basically IS Nickelodeon. It's basically the Sponge Network.

The easiest adaptation would be Doug as it's set in a human high school (no anthropomorphic animals) and the characters play in a band.

Harder would be other old animal cartoons like Ren & Stimpy, Cat & Dog, or Rocko's Modern Life.

The only one I'd be interested in would be the creepy Invader Zimm.

I think Spongebob is holding on better than most people predicted, and it probably stands to get a decent number of Tony noms (maybe Best Musical) because of limited competition. But I think this is Nickelodeon’s biggest property by far, and one of the only ones with an appeal beyond children.

MAYBE they would get into more family-oriented touring productions based on their shows/films, but that probably depends on how well Spongebob does on Broadway and on tour.

Kinda like when Sunset Blvd was nominated for Best Musical. Only two women were nominated for best actress in a musical: Glenn Close and Rebecca Luker (Showboat).

Nothing.  The answer is nothing. Nickelodeon should have never touched Broadway.

I'm not a Sponge Bob fan... had zero desire to see it, and that hasn't changed.   But I'm kind of surprised how so many dismiss Sponge Bob as a flop when if you average all the grosses, it's north of $700,000 a week.  Granted, we don't know what the weekly break even point is - and it doesn't look likely to recoup on Broadway, but I don't think it's hemorrhaging as badly as some think it is.  I do agree that the weeks coming ahead with Frozen looking to be some mega hit as well as Harry Potter, (and School of Rock still doing great business) that things aren't looking too good for it moving ahead, but at this point, could it be nearly breaking even on its weekly costs?

I think Doug is still owned by Disney, or at least in part. There was actually a musical stage show in Orlando for a while. It was pretty good too.

Maybe Spongebob WILL be the only Nickelodeon Broadway musical. Dreamworks' only Broadway adaptation's been Shrek the Musical (another show that people questioned at first and it turned out not that bad, just like Spongebob), and Shrek will always be DreamWorks' signature film, just like Spongebob is Nickelodeon's signature show, therefore making it possibly the only Broadway adaptation.

But that's just my thoughts.

If you're able to pay your weekly costs, but not put anything toward returning money to your investors, then you're failing. If I run up a huge credit card bill, and make the minimum payment every month, and the principal never even starts to come down... am I breaking even?

The show is still open, so why talk about it as a failure?

Wow. Could you imagine!

“Well tonight we’re going to see ‘Doug’ at the Shubert. We were told that Sutton is a WONDER as Patti Mayonaise. Michael Mayer’s staging is also supposed to be his best work to date. And tomorrow we have tix for ‘Ahhhhh Real Monsters’ at the O’Neil. Which should be cute. I’m a big fan of Smashing Pumpkins and I’m told their score is really special. But of course we’re most excited for Hugh Jackman in ‘Rocco’s Modern Life’ in previews at the Minskoff. We’ve already seen it twice but we just must see it again. He won the Tony for originating the role, don’t you know. Did you catch Nico Muhly’s ‘Rugrats’ at The Met last season? Divine! Such depth and nuance!”

I do think if Nick was to do another show (I don't think they should but if), it should be rugrats because it would introduce the characters to gen xers and millennial would actually pay to see this. Honestly if Mean Girls does well it may be worth considering solely based on millennial buying power of broadway shows

I think Spongebob has a much bigger life regionally and will be a HIT!  The entire time I was thinking this show is very much like Seussical (with crappy lyrics).  It would also work really well on cruiseships.  As someone mentioned Spongebob IS Nickelodeon.  I don't think their catalog has that much worth mining.  This show has legs though and what source material for schools and colleges to go crazy with.   It is MORE relevant than Seussical.

Speaking of, Doug... Doug Live! At Disney was really well done, I'm surprised Disney hasn't begun licensing that for schools.  Music by Lodin & Squier.  The Doug creators were actually putting together a Broadway/Off-Broadway show before Doug Live! was greenlit.  The Doug franchise is really tangled up in some rights issues (Disney/Nick) which is why you don't see a reboot.  Certainly prime time for a wholesome show.

Wow I have a very distinct memory of this from when I was young. Doug called into a radio station and won a contest by naming the song "Hey, watch it man, that's my foot!" by "The Beets".

While that may be true (except the redefinition of hit), this seems like a very dangerous show in the hands of a lot of the Corky St. Clairs out there.

I wouldn't mind a slightly more grown-up musicalization of Hey Arnold!, but I would rather have that planned and then abandoned spin-off series about middle school-aged Helga and her family. Of course the problem with turning successful tv series into musicals (or even movies) is that these shows have a following because the audience gets to know the characters who build episode-by-episode for years and the stand-alone plots of musicals/movies can't capture the feeling of satisfaction of the entire show for new audiences (or even current ones).

Again, you have to keep in mind that having SpongeBob in the middle of Times Square is huge advertising for both the SpongBob brand and Nickelodeon. And unlike print ads or commercials they are still raking in money to offset their costs.  They can probably afford to lose money on the production while benefiting from brand recognition and product placement for future endeavors.
