I love Patti's diction.

I agree with Musto. There's nothing wrong with her diction. There hasn't been since 1988, almost 25 years ago, when it was slurred, for many reasons that haven't been valid since.

People who criticize her diction are actually just mindlessly repeating an old canard, which was made funny by the Forbidden Broadway parody.

But the criticisms aren't based on actual performances. They're just knee-jerk things to say.

I posted on Musto's blog that Patti's diction, to me, is compelling and urgent and I think she is a great actress.

Does Musto... get paid to write stuff like this?

Why complain about not understanding Patti LuPone when there are SO MANY unnecessary standing ovations being given out?

She's got the biggest diction on Broadway, bar none.

Patti is Patti in everything she does. You never forget that it's Patti Lupone. That is not to say that she is untalented. She isn't.

That's just not true.

Agreed, PJ. In Les Miserables in London, she was Fantine -- not LuPone. In Evita, the same. Gypsy? Hmm. She was kinda LuPone.

I remember as a kid listening to Evita and looking a word up in the dictionary. There is a part where she says let's be friends "civil vised."

How long since the last thread regarding her diction? I love her diction and how she enunciates. :)

I place the blame squarely on her wig.

I miss words, important words, when I see her live. That's just the truth. But, the truth is, I never got her. Except when she would belt every once in a while, I'd say to myself, she's got a decent voice. But then she would slur a note and bend a word so I couldn't understand it and I would forget that I ever liked her for a second.
Not a good actress, in my opinion. Just a bull on stage. Not my style, I'm afraid. But I see why a lot of my friends like her. The diva thing. Now, I just find her embarrassing. Not as embarrassing as Liza, but sometimes close.
