Usually threads derail over time. This one managed to be derailed in one post. Amazing.

Thank you to the people who actually tried to help answer my question. I wish we knew what happened with the Lupone negotiations..

I really can't believe how many people are so critical of the Into the Woods movie.
It's not even remotely bad. Are there flaws from creative changes? Sure
But that entire cast could sing the damn score and some of the renditions of the songs are top notch, the best that we've ever experienced from any performance of this show
It's not bad. It's probably the best of the Sondheim film adaptations (ignoring West Side Story), but, like almost very musical film adaptation, all the creative energy and drive that's present onstage got kind of sucked out in the interest of safety. Pretty dully shot, too.
The cast of the film was great. I have no qualms with that. The first half of the film is great and then it goes to crapville in the second act. Overall, it's an incredibly mediocre film based on a masterpiece musical.

This is all gossip of course but in her SethTV concert she says that it was all "bull****, and Bernadette got it all," I believe it had to do with salary and other requests like top billing.

There's also that story that Patti didn't want to play the Witch and was pushing to be cast as Cinderella, which obviously would have factored into negotiations falling apart.

I forgot about that concert! Yes i remember now. If I recall correctly Patti did want to be Cindy but they told her what they wanted Witch. I then believe the way the story was told was that she eventually consented to doing the Witch but negotiations fell through. Are there any Sondheim biographies that cover extensively the process of Into The Woods?

Yup, Patti has stated this multiple times. They wanted her as the witch, she wanted Cinderella. A mistake on her part, because she would have been a KILLER Witch.

Minor update for those interested : an article i found points toward Buckley being involved in what was a spring two week workshop in 1987. After the tryout and original workshops/readings. https://www.nytimes.com/books/98/07/19/specials/sondheim-tale.html
So it would make sense that Stay with Me could have been written during that two week workshop with Buckley. A tumblr user (I know how bad that sounds LOL) posted this http://muzicalz.tumblr.com/post/93885114025/is-the-witch-from-into-the-woods-a-lesbian-her It basically gives a potential reason for Buckley's departure. The Witch was originally written as a lesbian? That strikes me as strange. Though Buckley's refusal to play the role how Lapine wanted it could have been the deciding factor to fire her/she quit. But by all accounts Buckley was involved in the last workshop before Bernadette came in. I know there is an audio floating around claiming that its the first reading in 1985 with Betty but the NYT article doesn't correlate with that.
