Is 'Curtains' worth seeing?

It is definitely worth seeing. No, don't expect another CABARET, CHICAGO, or KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN but actually this show NEVER sells itself or attempts to be anything like those shows.
The cast is superb, starting with David Hyde Pierce who steals the show in every scene (his showstopping "A Tough Act to Follow" couldn't be more appropriately titled). Debra Monk is perfectly cast in the type of role that she does best, Karen Ziemba gets to show off that she is a true triple-threat (delicious comic timing, incredible sadness and nostalgia during "Thinking of Him," explosive sexiness and dancing madness during "Thataway," and true leading lady quality), Jason Danieley's voice is so powerful plus he gets to sing one of the most memorable songs in the show "I Miss the Music." I found Edward Hibbert to be hilarious and fun.
Jill Paice is perhaps the only weak link for me. The score is not Kander & Ebb's finest but there are some gems, and the cast makes the score shine through even at its weak points.
I highly recommend it.

Posted: 6/27/07 at 4:50pmI was going to say the same thing, joe. I think the question as far as "worth seeing" for me has to do with cost. I went to Deuce because I got comps. Would I have paid $60? no. That's the real question.

Definitely see it. Especially for DHP and Monk!
The score definitely has some K&E classics.

I mostly agree with Ray's sentiments.
It was a lot of fun. Going back in a few weeks with some friends who haven't seen it.

Posted: 6/27/07 at 8:05pmAbsolutely. Debra Monk and Edward Hibbert are absolute riots, and David Hyde Pierce gives a great performance. Also, Megan Sikora performs a dance routine (entitled "Kansasland") that's easily one of the best dance performances I've seen on Broadway in recent years.

Posted: 6/27/07 at 8:32pmIt's a better show than it sounds on the OBCR but it's not great. As everyone says though, DHP IS great and definitely worth 52 bucks.

Who said Noah doesn't "bring it"? This is not a dance show the way NEVER GONNA DANCE was - he is incredible with what he's given to do.
This is one of the most fun shows I have ever seen with an absolute cream-of-the-crop cast of performers, from the leads to the ensemble. It is DEFINITELY worth seeing - the score is infectious, the book is lots of fun and quite funny, and if you are a fan of anyone in the cast, you won't be disappointed. They all "bring it" - each and every one.

Seriously? It's all gymnastics and flexability. It's not a great dance performance. I really wasn't impressed with the choreography of it, but she is very good at doing gymnastics and acrobatics.
Rath, that was me who said that. And I agree, he's not given much. I think Rob Ashford is more the reason I didn't enjoy Noah. Had the choreography been better, I think Noah would have impressed me more.

Um Curtains choreo was outstanding. Kansasland and Thataway are excellently choreographed and executed. Seeing this show was such a treat because I felt like there is a glimmer of hope for old fashioned musicals.
No one sings into a hand-held mic and stomp around. It was heaven. It is also great to hear a full orchestra. I really put the shows flaws aside and just devoured this piece of musical theatre candy!

Posted: 6/27/07 at 9:41pmOh BwayBaby, I love the old fashioned musical as much as the next guy, and hated Spring Awakening. That being said, Curtains' choreography is barely satisfactory, not even CLOSE to "outstanding". Not nearly Rob Ashford's best work. I love him usually, but not here.

Posted: 6/27/07 at 9:43pmHis Wedding Singer choreography was a lot better, Im a big fan of Kander and Ebb and of the cast, as well as Ashford's, just didn't find anything great about this show. Their Tony performance was fantastic though, the only song I enjoy from the show.

Listen to the CD first. It has some first rate (under appreciated) songs that you can't get out of your head. Sure the score is derivitive (its a take off on show business after all) but very very tuneful and the lyrics very clever.
I still think Curtains with a different opening number could have been a hands down winner. The book simply needs work to get the audience to care about its characters; therein likes the flaw.
Deborah Monk is a scene stealer and worth the price of admission. David Hyde Pierce commits to a New England Accent
which won him a Tony Award. He is likeable. Karen Ziemba is always great.
It is a homage to show business filled with inside jokes that can be truly appreciated in a CD listening session.
As it stands, it is an entertaining if not totally involving night in the theatre. I maintain--with a rewrite of the opening-- it could have been. Definitely worth seeing.

Posted: 7/1/07 at 1:33pmIt's not a great piece of material, but it has unquestionably the most talented cast of Broadway veterans you can find. DHP, Monk, Ziemba and Danieley are all outstanding. Then you have people in minor roles, and even in the ensemble, who have played leads on Broadway - Edward Hibbert, Noah Racey, Michael McCormick, Ernie Sabella, Jim Newman, Darcie Roberts. Even the conductor, David Loud, gets to sing a little solo!
#48re: Is 'Curtains' worth seeing?
Posted: 7/1/07 at 1:47pmIt's worth it. I thought there wasn't one song I didn't like when I saw it. Later, when I got the album, I realized that there were some songs I didn't like, and I realized the performances were what made me like them. The performances are stellar and even if the song isn't amazing, they perform the heck out of them. Obviously it has its share of flaws, but I saw right past them. The superb cast is what really makes the show.
