My daughter has requested a trip to Broadway to celebrate her 16th birthday. We are coming from out of state for our first Broadway experience.
She has selected Legally Blonde for Friday evening, Wicked for Saturday matinée, and Rent for Sunday matinée. I know she also wants to see Spring Awakening and I was thinking of adding a Saturday evening show.
Do you think 2 shows in 1 day is too much for a 16 year old? Any other tips for making a 16th birthday special on Broadway?
Im 16 and ive seen 2 shows in one day twice before. Once when i has just turned 15 and we saw Phantom in the afternoon and We Will Rock You on the evening, and then again just last October when id just turned 16 and saw Wicked and We Will Rock You in one day.
When I go to London again in June we are seeing Mamma Mia at 5:30 then straight to avenue q for the 8:30 show and then on the saturday we are seeing Little Shop matinee and lion king on the evening.
Those are my favorite days! I love seeing back to back shows! I think especially because this is her first broadway experience, see as many as you can. These are once in a lifetime chances sometimes. you never know when something will close, or when you will be able to return to the city.
It is definitely not too much. I've done 2 shows in one day before with a 3 hr drive before and after. it's MUCH easier if you're already staying in or just outside the city. I say go for it! You will both enjoy it. :)
I think it would make for a pretty exciting day for her. I do it all the time. (I am much older than 16!) But I enjoy doing 2 shows on the same day. After the 1st you can take a short walk around the city. I always like to breeze through Rockefeller Center and grab a bite to eat. (Usually Ray's pizza!) Enjoy...and take her to see Spring Awakening. A very good show for both teens and parents. I have seen it and loved it.
I went to a Regis and Kelly taping, then a movie screening at Universal, then a matinee, then a night performance, and then a movie at amc 25.
too much is never enough.

"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!" -E!'s "The Soup"
I do that ALL the time. I head to NYC to see shows several times a year and on EVERY visit I muster a 2-show Saturday. It's the norm for me.
2pm matinee, then a nice break after the show (maybe sneak in a cancellation line attempt for the evening show if it's not booked yet), then dinner then the 8pm show.
One time I saw Doubt, then Slava's Snow Show-ugh- and then Bridge and Tunnel at night.
Other time Jersey Boys, Naked Boys Singing and then Sweet Charity.
Don't miss SPRING AWAKENING!

I'm a teenager (also out-of-state) and last year was my first NYC experience. In two days we saw three broadway shows and a taping of the David Letterman show. Sure, it was hectic, but I loved every minute of it. This year, we are returning to the city again and we are aiming for four shows in three days. If she requested to see Broadway shows for her birthday, she obviously loves them and two shows won't be enough

As everyone has said, two shows is not a stretch at all, you will have some time to have a nice dinner and decompress in between, and Spring Awakening will thrill her. If you've gone all the way with travel expenses, silly as it sounds, it'll be another $225 well spent.
What nobody has said yet is... thank you. You sound like an awesome parent and you'll probably instill a love of theatre that will last her a lifetime as well as provide you with an awesome binding experience. Please introduce your daughter to these boards, it would be interesting to see both of your comments and viewpoints on the shows you see together. Oh, and I'm available for adoption .
