Posted: 5/5/09 at 11:25pmI think Will Ferrell poses some sort of threat, IMHO.

Let's see:
A beloved Broadway legend who put her heart and fake hips on the line and scored a major success, even with a ravaged voice, and had people screaming every night she sweated her guts out.
or
A TV and Movie star who made his debut with a show he was basically working out for a Cable Special.
Tough call.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 11:42pmLiza had better win this one. I saw it 11 times and I wish I had been able to see it more. She was outstanding.

Posted: 5/5/09 at 11:49pmI certainly hope! She was brilliant, and clearly deserves to win!

Posted: 5/5/09 at 11:53pmNo, she is certainly not a shoo-in. It would be cool if she did win, but Will Farrel is her major competition, and deservedly so.

Ferrell is serious competition, but Liza had better take it. If she doesn't, I may throw my TV across the room.
(My TV survived last year, since Patti won.)

I don't understand how Ferrell could be competition. His special was AWFUL and I don't think Tony voters would have liked it.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, this is a chance to give Liza Minnelli a TONY. And I think voters would give their goddess the opportunity to make that acceptance speech.

Posted: 5/6/09 at 12:59amWouldn't the producers take the Tony? Even is she made the speech, the Tony wouldn't be to her. And remember what happened to Stritch...

Posted: 5/6/09 at 1:00amWhat I dont understand is how WAT saw this show 11 times...I mean I love you WAT, but honey do you work...I hope so...how do you pay for all of this? Do you do anything outside of seeing shows? No judgement, just intense curiosity...

I didn't see any of the other nominees in the category, but I did see Liza's at the Palace and I was be very disappointed if it doesn't win. If Will Ferrell wins, I'll hate Bush even mote than I already do. Maybe I'll get together with the SA girl.

Curtain you make an EXCELLANT point and have convinced me to vote for Liza...if I could!
blaxx...so Stritch didn't get the Tony for that...does she not have any Tony yet?

BettyBoy, yes I work, which is why I was able to afford the tickets.
I sat in the balcony six times ($55), sat in the orchestra four times (full price) and rushed it once ($26).
December was a very costly month for me (I definitely went over budget), but I figured I would never have the opportunity to see Liza again, so I made the best of the five weeks she played the Palace.
I didn't do much else in December 2008 except take a weekend trip to DC to see West Side Story twice and Next to Normal...couldn't afford to do much else.

I saw her "preview" of this show in Fort Worth when she did it last summer.
She did a big section that featured songs from a female singer and her dancing boys.
What was the name of the femal singer, I forgot?

Posted: 5/6/09 at 12:10pmWAT, I totally feel you and I wasnt judging. I think of the Sex and the City episode where Carrie said she would buy Vogue instead of dinner because it "fed me more." I understand making theatre a priority. I wasn't making fun, but you are at everything (rushes, book signings, CD signings, stage doors) and I just wondered how you make it all happen.

It's not easy, BettyBoy! I have everything in my calendar and am very organized as to which shows I'm seeing which days. I always have a backup plan (if this first preview is delayed, I will see it this other day instead). I try to plan my finances as best I can (keep a spreadsheet detailing everything I spend)...and I usually don't get much sleep. When I finally get home from all this theater around 11:30pm, I still have to catch up with everything on my DVR (Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Without A Trace, 90210, Ugly Betty, Castle, etc). LOL.
But I completely understand what Carrie from SatC meant. Theater makes me so happy and I would never want to give it up.

Posted: 5/6/09 at 12:37pmSorry to thread jack a bit, but the title of this thread has "I was a Shoo-In" stuck in my head. I don't know if Liza would be able to memorize all those words, but I would love to hear her perform that song. (Maybe not just in a bath towel though, LOL)
#22re: Is Liza a shoo-in?
Posted: 5/6/09 at 12:40pmI would love to hear anybody sing that song. In or out of a bath towel.
