I get it, cause he's black!!!
Is there anything you lot do like?
Yes.
It seems that Tom Hooper has no idea what to do with the material on film so he is frantically running around to find "stars" from every possible field.
You know what they say, if you try to please everyone you will end up pleasing no one.
Why are people so up in arms? It's not as if CATS has this legacy of gravitas and decorum to uphold.
In 1957 West Side Story combined classical and popular musical styles, ballet and theatre, presentational and representational styles, and was a masterpiece. In the eighties, Cats did all of that but schitty. And isn't that part of the appeal? The balls-out absurdity of the idea and the piece?
Filling it with idiosyncratic superstars seems to fit the idea, if not the balletic, somewhat anonymous, execution of the piece.
This is going to be so wonderfully awful.
I don't understand why those of you on this board who have gone on record to say you don't like CATS are so invested in who gets cast in the film adaptation.

Because it’s so deliciously bad.

This is semi off topic, but Universal does not know how to pick directors for movie musicals. I mean Tom Hooper is a great director, but he should not be directing Cats. Do you know why? It’s not in his wheelhouse! Same with Stephen Daldry. The man has never directed a movie musical in his career and yet they’re putting the most anticipated movie musical on his shoulders.
To get back on topic, this is going to be a train wreck. I mean Annie 2014 bad. I mean A Chorus Line bad. (the movie, not the stage musical). I’m talking Joel Schumacher’s phantom of the opera bad.
And I’m going to be there opening night with bells on.
does this mean we will have the tugger rap version, oh please no.
Have you listened to Derulo’s music? He’s a singer, not a rapper.

Very, very true.
They have no clue. I think Tom Hooper is literally panicking about what to do with the material. He has absolutely no idea about the artform, this way of storytelling, what acting through song is (he thinks acting in spite of song is acting through song), whether to hire singers who can act through song or movie actors, no clue about the pacing of scenes, absolutely no idea about the given of sung thoughts on film and the essence of treating sung thoughts differently from sung dialogue, etc.
The person working at Universal responsible for this choice should be fired. Tom Hooper directing a movie musical is like giving my 2 year old nephew the responsibility of flying a boeing 747 filled with passengers. A situation that has no winners.
I'm not working on this production and I don't have any friends who are high ranking in it,
but i've heard this will be motion capture.
I can't wait to see CGI faces of celebrities with whiskers in tight close up while they sing "artistically" out of tune.
This is literally going to be the best stoned watch movie ever made.

With all the “talent” involved, I have a feeling this isn’t going to be the cats I fell in love with. This is going to be a autotuned mess, with feminist ideas being shoved down our throats. They will somehow turn this into Grizebella insisting that she doesnt need a man (or should I say cat) and how she is only selected to go to the heavyside layer cause she is a female.
Theres also no way in hell we see the orignal Rum tum tugger. It’s going to be the dreadful rapping version from london. I mean gotta make this hip!
With almost zero plot, and ZERO real talent, this film will miss the exact thing that made it work.
I will be seeing this after taking the fattest rip from the biggest bong I have, and I will enjoy this mess of a movie.
It’s going to be super funny watching all these people wearing Cat costumes jumping around for 2 hours lol.
Tom, if you read this, what are your views on the final scene with Old Deuteronomy? Where he sings his heavenly notes to the other cats?
How is Judi able to not make it the self-pitying, speak-bleating, retiring, subdued moaning, groaning she always does? She is not able to emote through song, but in spite of song. Don't ruin her scene by letting her attempt singing then, that hurts the acting. Use a voice over.
I know you have disdain for, and zero understanding of the material, but please, anything but this overemoting crap please. Acting out each syllable, spoken on the already very dramatic music is unbearable. And not filmic. And not raw or real.

I wonder if you'd have the same assumption if they had cast a white actor to play the role.
Jason DeRulo is a SINGER, not a rapper.

Jason Derulo doesn’t rap.

you know that like... almost no directors have directed big studio movie musicals right? because they’re done so rarely? never having done one puts you in the approximately 99.9%

Yes I know and I actually think he has a nice voice, but its ALW and he tends to believe that that rap version was the bees knees and would be more popular than the Elvis inspired original. I hope they keep the original.
as for the addressing of cats, i would not be surprised if this is either sung entirely be someone else or more likely sung by everyone ala the opening number as there is nothing in the song that makes necessitates it being sung by a particular cat.
