The New Group doesn't seem to use understudies; their production of Steve was cancelled the night I had tickets; it was close to the end of the run, and I wasn't available for any remaining performances. Annoying, but what can you do? I got a refund, and life went on.

Cancelling seems more than rash. I would imagine the stage manager or even the prompter could have stepped in. This isn't Chekhov.

Um, a stage manager is going to learn an entire vocal score in 45 minutes?

Clearly!
And there is no prompter.... and just because the stage manager might know the show/blocking it doesn't mean they are an actor or a singer or even comfortable on stage. And in that case who would run the show? Cancelling makes sense.
The role of Satan/Jonathan is by far the most demanding one in the show. It's really not the kind of part you can just throw someone into.
This isn't community theater. Just like non union peeps don't touch tools, people without acting contracts don't perform.

I’ve seen a stage manager step into an ensemble track on Broadway, so not always true.
Anyone know if the show happened tonight?

has Will Swenson ever been able to get through the run of a show without being out a bunch of times?
when I saw Priscilla his understudy was on, when I saw Murder Ballad his understudy (who was quiet good) was on, when I saw Little Miss Sunshine I mentioned this to him and he goes "you're lucky I almost called out this evening" and now he's apparently out of Springer.
When I saw Waitress he was also out, lol.
I mean, the flu isn’t exactly something you can control. And correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he temporarily leave Murder Ballad?

Should’ve gotten the flu shot.
What Broadway show did you see with a stage manager?!

On Your Feet. Twice. Same stage manager. The first time I didn't realize what was happening until I looked at the playbill at intermission. He jumped in and out a couple times. Then it happened again a few months later.

That's impressive. How did he do?

I've seen it as well, at Phantom a couple years back. Male leads were out, so all swings were on, and with a few sick ensemble members, a stage manager filled in some of the ensemble tracks. I don't believe he did any singing or possibly even any speaking, but he was in and out for the whole performance.
My S.O. is an Equity actor, and I forget the exact rules about it, but I believe this is part of the reason that stage managers are Equity, so they can, in an emergency, cover and fill in on stage.
That said, even if it's allowed, I doubt they'd be able to just jump in and cover this role.

Interesting! This one spoke and sang as part of the ensemble. But I agree, this isn’t a role a stage manager would be able to just jump in and cover.
I love Swenson, but his voice has always been weak when I've seen him perform. Unsure why he gets cast in musicals.

Was the show on tonight? With Swenson?
Agreed BettyBoy, never understood his appeal? His voice isn't anything interesting or special. And it's not like he makes crazy interesting choices, etc.

Yeah, I work for a hospital and to keep working we are required to get a flu shot every year. This strain that's going around is so bad that I got the flu even with having the shot. Just FYI
