"The artistic merits of the two shows aren't even debatable, and at this point, neither is the financial aspect. "
Next to Normal has recouped, and Shrek did not, so is that the financial aspect you're talking about?

No, the fact that given that n2n is going to outrun Shrek, he'd have made more money for himself staying with n2n.
Ah, thanks for clarifying.
broadwaybabe1234,

Woohoo!
Oh my GOD YES. I have been putting off going to see it again, but I will be there STAT to see him.

"I TOLD you all it would be exciting!"
Not really exciting news for some people. I personally would be more excited if Jessica Phillips takes over for Alice Ripley.
It's exciting for longtime fans of the show, given James' connection to it.
Phillips, as good as she is, will not be replacing Alice. In fact, she's apparently leaving the show entirely soon to be a part of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Exciting for people who saw him at Second Stage and know that he is lightyears better than Spencer.
DefyGravity, we get it you don't like Alice..move on
and I'm thrilled about Brian coming back!
Didn't think I'd ever go back. Back for BDJ I sure will SO excited!

"As for the awards, James still would have won the OCC and Drama Desk Awards that year, just for a different show."
The show and its cast were eligible for the Outer Critics Circle Awards and Drama Desk Awards in 2008 since it was Off-Broadway. Brian didn't get a nomination for either of these that year.

I do like Alice. I just like Jessica a lot better and would rather see her in the role. So sue me for liking someone else better.
I'm excited, since becoming a fan of the show I always wanted to see what it would have been like at 2nd Stage, and this is the next best thing. I'm sort of nervous that I'll always be a little biast about Bobby being Dan. Just like since Meghann was my first Natalie I like her a little more than Jenn. Meghann was not an understudy at 2nd stage, correct?

Right.Morgan Weed was.
This makes me super excited. I'm definitely going back now!
