The track record of success for sports themed musicals is pretty awful(all american, Lysistrata jones, rocky, etc) except for Damn yankees, and guesssing this could be another addition to the the sports musical wall of shame.

dont producers research this stuff before they write big checks?

that being said, could see norbert leo butz doing a great job in the Tom Hanks Role

Like most things: that's a matter of opinion. I know lots of folks that love it, and many that don't.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

He also said at an interview at the Library of Congress that he chose to back out of the project. He was saying that he had been doing these more commercial projects (like 13 and Honeymoon In Vegas) out of financial security, but A League of Their Own was where he realized it wasn't making him happy. He said he's working on other projects that he's more passionate about.

He has been writing a musical adaptation of Farewell, My Concubine, a Chinese movie about a Peking opera company during the political turmoil of Cultural Revolution. The movie is a beloved classic, some would say it's the best of all Chinese movies. It was banned in China 2 weeks after premiere because it touched on the subject of homosexuality, and being critical of Mao's government during the Cultural Revolution. The ban was lifted due to international outcry after it won Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1993. I remember seeing news that the musical had a workshop in February 2019 and another workshop this past February.

Edit: People attached to this project include Kenneth Lin (book), Moises Kaufman (director), Thomas Murray (music director).

JRB has a few songs that I really like, but as a Broadway composer, I don't get the draw. A lot of his scores feel bland and repetitious to me. I don't really think there needs to be a musical version of A League of their Own, and I think there is even less of a need for a musical version composed by JRB. Who knows, maybe this one will surprise me.

What's the score for that like, more in the Honeymoon in Vegas mode?

I hope that comes in with Billy Crystal.

"

Yes, it's probably most similar to Honeymoon in Vegas. Billy was as sharp and funny as ever in the presentation last summer, and I can't imagine the show without him.
