I LOVE J-HUD... but I think this is a pretty terrible casting choice. She has an incredible singing voice, but personally feel that she lacks the acting chops - not to mention comic timing - that Dolly requires. YMMV.

She’s not an actress. All her acting attempts have the worst bad line readings.
It’s been documented that her Oscar winning performance in the 2006 film adaptation of DREAMGIRLS was created during editing. Her acting limitations were quickly revealed after people auditioned her for roles. She’s just not an actress.

People were doing this for Bette in 2015 more than year before she even started rehearsal. This is a Broadway chatboard, this is what we do.
I personally think with coaching she can become a really good actress. She surely has the personality for Dolly but as she is right now, I wouldn't cast her in any on stage role.

Nope. Jennifer can sing and emote like nobody's business. I'd pay top dollar for her concerts. Can't act her way out of a paper bag. Dolly takes big personality. I'd take Nene over Hudson for Dolly. Ok, maybe not, but you see what I'm getting at.

What is really disturbing about this post, is that you would even discuss it as a possibility out loud, let alone think of it....seriously?

Did you not see her in Color Purple? She was a void of stage presence and acting ability. Dolly would expose her in a very cruel way.
plus she’s way too young.
Christine Baranski?
Vanessa Williams?

Who would be a good drag Dolly?
Nathan Lane? Harvery Fierstein?

No---I saw her in Color Purple and her songs were incredible, but the acting was very blah.
I do like the idea of Vanessa Williams!!!

She can't act and she's too young, but look on the bright side. If she takes acting lessons, she might be able to headline a live TV version in around ten years.

I think Tyne Daly could be a great Dolly. If she could pull off a memorable Mama Rose, she can be Dolly.
The other one who could possibly be good in the role is Cheryl Ladd . Thought she was excellent when I saw her in "Annie Get Your Gun" some 18 years ago, and I think she would be a great Dolly Levy. Great charisma on stage, and a very good singing voice.
