This is pretty fantastic!
Jonathan and Lin Manuel-Miranda are good friends, so it's not like this is surprising, but seems I've been waiting FOREVER for them to do a big project together.
Any guesses as to how long he stays with the company?
Assuming Looking gets a third season, I think they'd go back to San Francisco to shoot in the early fall (I think last year they shot from September-November). Is it reasonable to guess that he'd be with the production through the end of August? That's about a six-month commitment if you count the time he'll be in it at the Public, but it's only one 'official' month of the Broadway run.
I do wonder about A New Brain, but that's only like a two-week commitment, yes?
I'm trying to figure out when to try to land tickets ... in my book, this is a can't-miss.
great voice, not a great actor IMO
HBO ain't gonna cancel its gay show unless they have a better reason that low ratings.
Groff would be smart to return to B'way in a show that he doesn't have to carry. This is almost a win-win, how ever long he remains. He could do any number of performances. The role could even be one than changes hands often, like the Berthe in PIPPIN or countless others. Why not?

I don't understand how A New Brian could conflict if Jonathan transfers with Hamilton.
A New Brain is June 24-27 and Hamilton doesn't even start previews on Broadway until July 13th.
Yes, he may have to pull double duty with rehearsing a little bit but with the size of the role of King George in Hamilton i'm sure it can be done just like Brian is now with Something Rotten.
My apologies- my comment about Hamilton and Frozen was indeed an ironic analogy, not a pun. I guess saying "analogy intended" just didn't sound as catchy to me! Lol...
Does Groff start today? Is anyone going? If so, please report back!
The Public website says "Jonathan Groff joins the cast beginning March 2" but there isn't a performance that day so I'm assuming his first day is Tues.
It's hard to imagine Groff screwing up this role. It's so funny and well-written that I think any semi-competent theatre actor could perform it well.
Yes, today is Brian's last time in the role, and Groff starts on 3/3. Looking forward to hearing how he does!
I think Brian is going to feel so bad when his show flops and Jonathan stays with the show even when it goes to broadway.
^ That's a BIT insensitive, don't you think?
Have you *seen* SOMETHING ROTTEN? Has anyone?
Like, c'mon now.
It's not insensitive, it's immature.
I'm sure he suspected it would make the move and he made a choice.

Maybe he'll get to return to it one day just like he did when he made a similar decision with Next to Normal and Shrek.
Groff is painfully bad in Looking. It would be a good show except everyone is is obsessed with his character and he's so bland that it makes everyone else bland by default.
Sorry - that was a bit of a tangent for this thread.
I hope he doesn't transfer with this.
Groff was sitting next to me yesterday. Such a nice guy. He said for right now he's there for the rest of the Public run. Depending on another show (don't know if he meant Looking or an another actual show), he'll figure out if his transferring. He just said that he's grateful to be a part of it at all, even if it will just be at the Public.
I'm gonna start campaigning now. Get yer "Norbs for George" buttons, folks!
The real irony about the Frozen/Hamilton reference is that in 'Frozen', Groff's character doesn't get a song. Why the heck do you get Jonathan Groff to play a character in a Disney movie and not give him a song? He did get a very short silly rhyme about his reindeer, but it wasn't what you'd call a song...
So, was anyone there tonight for his first performance? I'd love to hear how he did!

sarahb22 - huh? What about that makes the reference ironic?

sarahb22, you obviously don't know what irony is.
Groff is not confirmed for Broadway. It depends on Brian, and a lot of other things. Don't assume Groff is going to Broadway with it.

Sort of like Idina Menzel in Enchanted...no singing at all. But I remember she was happy to be asked to do something that did not involve singing - not that she didn't want to sing but being she is known for singing, it felt good to be asked to do a non-singing role.
How dare they give an actor an acting role. Sheesh.
I'm no huge fan, but I thought he (the voice) was charming in FROZEN. He and Bell sounded like a couple of the same age and sensibilities.
Yeah, and why didn't they give him a song in American Sniper?
