Hard to believe that it's been eighteen years since the Marin Mazzie, Brian Stokes Mitchell revival that was very successful and ran for over two years. Does Kelli think she could improve on Marin?
More to the point, in her recent interview with Jim Zirin on "Conversations for the Digital Age" she said that she had reached the age where she would no longer take on a role that was just fun, like Nice Work I suppose. She would only take roles that offered her the chance to "start a conversation" on important issues.
For The King and I there was the place of women in society and the education of children, especially girls. If My Fair Lady then the lingering class divisions we have in this country.
Cole Porter didn't write many serious musicals and the comedy in Kiss Me, Kate is quite broad. Not sure what meaningful message we could take from it.
Not sure that I like the idea of a trained vocalist and actress presuming to take my $100 in exchange for her trying to change my beliefs in a performance.

I remember watching the DVD of Kiss Me, Kate- the version that Rachel York and Nancy Anderson did of this show and I thought it was so boring and slow, like a bad production of Encores! Did anyone else finds this show painfully slow?

Eh. There's some stuff about misogyny/gender dynamics at least in the context of romantic relationships in there both in the Kate/Petruchio and the Lilli/Fred plots. But yes, it would seem to be more in line with Hello Dolly and providing a good time in the theater that provoking a conversation.
Also, I LOVE the Rachel York/Brent Barrett Kiss Me Kate. That would be my hesitation with Kelli. I know Kathryn Grayson did the movie but after Rachel I think of Lilli as more of a dame. She was fired up for "Shall I Tell You What I Think of You" but no one has topped Rachel's version of "I Hate Men" for me and I don't know if Kelli would bring that kind of intensity.

Do you really care why any actor onstage decided to take a role? Isn't your job to see what you take from their performance?
I've known enough actors and when you hear them talk about what they are getting out of a piece, you're thinking like, "OK... if that's working for you... not sure anyone in the audience is getting that from it..."

That's awfully profound for me. I don't see myself as having a job. I paid to be entertained. I'm willing to pay much money to see a musical artist because he or she has vocal and acting skills as far above me as the moon. (And the more I see Kelli O'Hara the more convinced I am that she is an extraordinarily gifted musical actress. If she could only tap.) But I in no way see that person as qualified to instruct me on the education of girls. If she were well-informed on that subject than she would presumably know that ten percent more girls enroll in a four year college after high school graduation than boys and that for every four girls who receive bachelors degrees there are only three boys. Then she would not be so worried about the education of girls.

Yes, I think that parts of Kiss me, Kate drag. It's a good thing there are so many good songs. I find that "Always True to You in my Fashion" and "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" are witty songs that drag on through too many verses. The two highlights of the Musical for me are probably "Wunderbar" and "So in Love" which I think were done to perfection by Marin and Brian.
Kelli of course just did the role for the the Roundabout gala in December, which no doubt kicked this all off. After watching that Zirin interview this is not a role I would have expected her to take.
If you're an O'Hara fan I think it's worth watching. On YouTube I think.

Kelli would be lovely in Kiss Me Kate, but I do really hope that she's talking about Carousel. I've been longing for a Carousel revival for quite some time now and she sings the score beautifully.

If that's true I'm disappointed. I love Kelli but I feel her talents would be wasted in Kiss Me Kate. If she wasn't going to be in the rumored Carousel revival, I was hoping for the My Fair Lady revival.

Yes, but she isn't telling you she is qualified on this, but that it is a reason she was attracted to do a role. If you go to the show, she's not going to be passing out pamphlets at intermission... if she brings something unique to a role that makes you see this aspect in a new way, then good on her. But mostly, she takes a job for her reasons, and you buy tickets for yours... I'm sure she wouldn't necessarily agree with the reason a lot of patrons purchased their tickets to see a show she is in, so not sure why we should care why she picks what jobs she does. Of course, if she is asked about it in an interview, then sure tell them, but it seems strange to critique her choices based on this rather than the performance itself.

I don't think Ms. O'Hara was referring to the education of women in the United States. If you were well-informed on the subject, than you would presumably know that globally, 65 million girls are not in school. There are 31 million girls of primary school age not in school, and 17 million of these girls will probably never attend school in their lifetimes. There are 33 million fewer girls than boys in primary school. Girls with eight years of education are four times less likely to marry as children.

Kelli O'Hara starred in a benefit concert of Kiss Me Kate for Roundabout in December. If she expressed interest in doing a full production, I imagine they would mount one for her in a heartbeat, considering she starred in one of their most successful productions ever. It's been nearly twenty years since the last revival, which was superb--enough time has passed.

Yes, but she isn't telling you she is qualified on this, but that it is a reason she was attracted to do a role. If you go to the show, she's not going to be passing out pamphlets at intermission... if she brings something unique to a role that makes you see this aspect in a new way, then good on her. But mostly, she takes a job for her reasons, and you buy tickets for yours.

For everyone who wants to see in Kelli in Carousel, it's not the same as live theater but the DVD of the 2013 Live From Lincoln Center one time performance backed up by the New York Philharmonic and starring Kelli, Nathan Gunn and Jessie Mueller was released last month and is available everywhere.

Guys, I love Kelli O'Hara too, but she's about to turn 41. She got to do Julie Jordan and Eliza Doolittle in very high-profile concert stagings and I think that's going to be it.
