The Hamilton team has worked hard to get their show associated with the Obama administration as Camelot did with the Kennedys. I imagine the premature nostalgia and awards have as much to do with missing the Obamas as they do with missing the original Broadway cast.

A lot of deserving talent for sure, but a bit of a snooze-fest so far! Will peeps even hold on until Cher?
Looks like Broadway producer Jeffrey Seller has two commercials tonight; Hamilton and The Cher Show.
Meteorologists finally shut up. Rejoined awards with Whoopi talking. Whatd I miss?
Little Big Town seem like a weird choice to honor Cher.

This show has generally sucked tonight even if it ends on a high note.
The Hamilton peeps & its performances just seemed out of place. Maybe it's just me.
Looking forward to the rest of Cher's tribute.
I won't lie; it's great to see Nancy Pelosi sitting next to Cher...
As for the show this year, every honoree has told a compelling story, very worthy and deserving them all.
The tributes are as always, hits and misses.
Adam Lambert and Lauper both brought it. Everything else..... MEH!

Basically. I enjoyed the Reba & the Philip Glass tributes. Little Big Town didn't belong there (was there no one else available?). A shame the Cher Show couldn't perform.
I agree with ACL, the tributes did have their better and "best" moments. Glass had a great moment to tell his story. Adam Lambert and Cyndi truly killed with wonderful and funny performances. Kristin, as much as I love her, still makes totally odd choices. (Hamilton anyone ?) My friend John, that worked it, said CBS edited 3 + hours of filming down to less than 2 hours, almost every act got edited down...(that's sad)...Does anyone know if they archive the total complete ceremonies each year to keep at the Kennedy Center Library?
Finally watched the part of the show that was preempted here due to weather coverage. My final takeaways:
1) Enjoyed it more than others appear to have.
2) I teared up during One More Time.
3) I appreciate Philip Glass's contribution to our culture even more. For some reason, I always thought of his musical being more atonal (which I dont object to). I need more of his music in my life. I thought his musical tributes were very well done.
4. I agree that the video packages seem to be missing something. All the lifetime honorees were very deserving, but the video packages didnt really capture that. They showed highlights from their lives, but didn't chronologically build the story of their lives effectively. Perhaps this was because they rely on the presenters to relay some of this information, but that just isnt as effective in this venue. The presenters should talk about how they've personally been impacted by the honoree’s career and then let the video show (not tell) the story. It would all feel more personal that way. Instead, it felt like we just got highlight reels.

Totally agree about the video packages Miles2Go2. They felt very choppy and having individual presenters verbally fawn over honorees also added to he disruptive choppy feeling.
Watching On Demand. loved the Reba tribute. Esperaza Spalding is on now and killing it! Loving it so far!
Just read it was the lowest rated broadcast.

I agree with your entire post (and others who made similar comments), especially the part I quoted. I do feel like George Stevens,Jr. was instrumental in ensuring that it was a polished production. Under his influence, the narratives were articulate, cohesive, educational (particularly helpful for honorees less well known, but nonetheless masterful contributors to the arts) and still entertaining. I wasn't all that impressed with Estefan as host. Adam Lambert and Cyndi were terrific; I felt the others were less than stellar. I was so impressed that Phillip Glass was honored - such a powerful, original musical talent.
I've viewed this show annually, and understand that the performers/honoree selected for the concluding acts are given that placement in recognition of their ability to really deliver a tribute. Who can forget Aretha for Carole King...what a seminal performance that was...forever to be remembered.
BTW: I've actually researched obtaining previous Kennedy honors shows and DVDs are available via Ebay. I hope to purchase the entire collection someday.
I wish they had brought Orfeh in to blow a Cher song out of the water. It would have been nice with their personal history.
I had to look up the connection, but yeah, that would have been a hell of a lot better than that Little Big Town medley of her songs. That was a real head-scratcher. No knock against them, but they just didnt seem like a natural choice.
CBS Sunday Morning just posted the full 39-minute interview with the Hamilton peeps:

Who is Orfeh? And what is their connection?

He’s a Top Chef winner and regularly appears on The Rachel Ray Show with his comfort food segments and all his recipes are named after Cher songs and films.
Dame, you can watch about the connection HERE.

Interesting, but wouldn't matter much to anyone watching BUT Cher...
Enjoyed the entire show. Wasn't crazy about the stripped down Schyuler Sister's number. They sounded great but I think they should have performed it as done in the show.
Renee Fleming blew me away.
The diversity of the music is what made it so enjoyable for me.
Im really surprised no one has mentioned Kelly Clarkson who, vocally, easily offered the best female performance of the night
