LEAP OF FAITH Reviews

Looks like Alan Menken is going to be the unique position of having a hit musical and a flop musical both in the same season.

Just because Ben Brantley dissed Raul's performance doesn't mean he's out of the running for a nomination. There has been more acknowledgement of his attempt even if it is a miss. The show itself is taking more of a hit than Raul's performance and I think that's rightfully so.

Alexandra Burke in The Bodyguard

I wonder if the producers regret not putting Beverley Knight or Alexandra Burke in at the start as Heather Headley was not a big crowd puller or very reliable from what I've heard. Is Alexandra Burke doing the tour of this show?

All I can say is that there must have been a couple bad press performances with Raul and Matthew this past week because the shows I saw in earlier previews did not warrant such bad commentary on either of their performances.

Really, I wouldn't fret about whether Esparza gets a nomination or not, or anyone else, for that matter. It makes no difference who the nominees are. Kazee has it all sewn up.

The link works fine for me.

Didn't someone say earlier in the thread that Brantley usually loves the Raul? That would take away inlovewithjerryherman's suggestionn.

Can't disagree, aftereight, but the nominations do make a difference for the shows financial success.

CPD, I just guffawed at that post. Bravo.

Mc,

Do you really think so?

I don't think nominations do that much for the box office, nor do even wins in acting categories.

The only things that do are wins for best play/ musical, and even then, not always, eg. Passion got a brief boost and then dropped off soon.

So....is LEAP or GHOST going to take that final spot for Best Musical come May 1st? Thoughts?
#89

LEAP OF FAITH Reviews

Possibly neither. Like others, I like Bonnie & Clyde or Spider-man's chances at this point (especially the latter).

Spider-Man getting a nomination wouldn't surprise me, has any musicals that got negative reviews ever been nominated.

"choitoy, if she is a Raoul fan, take her to Phantom. That'll still be running in November."

That sneaky "O" sneaking in there. My mistake...

She does like Phantom, but not enough to waste a slot on it on a Broadway trip...

Oh well, I guess we should be looking to line up other shows to see on Tuesday and Friday night then, judging by these reviews...

I wasn't much surprised by the critical response to Esparza, but as no one in these LEAP threads seemed to have anything much to say regarding Jessica Phillips and Kendra Kessebaum -- and especially after Brantley's swipe at Phillips (aforementioned by dramamama) I think both of these are going to have a tough time getting their next principle role on Broadway (at least in a new musical). Even prior to these reviews, I thought it was highly doubtful for Esparza to snag a Tony nomination, but in the end his career isn't in peril because after it closes he'll be blameless in the grand scheme of things.

egghumor: If Kendra Kessebaum isn't going to get a role on Broadway, she always has the 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle. I think it was mentioned by them that she recently moved here, and she was originally going to be the lead female role in thier co-production of "First Date" (her pictures were on the posters and everything), until LoF got moved up to spring. It's understandable why she would drop out of a regional world premiere production to take a Broadway role, but she does seem to have a B-plan.

My assertion regarding Kendra Kassebaum or Jessica Phillips is not intended as personal statement regarding either woman's talent, but about the potentially damaging effects of flop shows. I distinguish the two of them from Raul Esparza because his reputation was well-established prior to LEAP.

Dramamama, I don't mean ill intent toward the (in my opinion) extraordinarily talented mr. Esparza, and in my original post I did not mean to "dump" on him.

The fact of the matter is, Ben Brantley, as mean as he is, is a great critic. Until now, mr Esparza has found roles that are, in a way, critically infallible for someone with his level of talent (Bobby in COMPANY, Charlie in SPEED-THE-PLOW, etc). As of late, it seems that the "word" is that Mr. Esparza is not a pleasant person, and Brantley, finally given the chance, has given the man a very unpleasant kick in the a$$. And Brantley means every word - it reads as if he relishes in delivering such a pan to (as so many others have referred to him) "the Raul".

Chris Ashley must be kicking himself that he didn't stick with Pal Joey at the Kennedy Center. (And Michael Kaiser must be kicking him twice as hard). Still bummed that the production had to fold due to Ashley's withdrawal from the project...it had the real potential of being another winner (and b'way transfer) for the KC.

These reviews don't seem quite as contemptuous of the show as the set for Ghost.
