My friend called me at 8:45 to tell me she was at la cage and a strange thing happened. She said from the moment Daniel Davis opened his mouth he sounded sick, but he was going on. Then, suddenly, in the middle of one of his songs, he cracks and starts talking to the audience. He proceeds to tell them that he got a virus before the show. He said take a ten minute break and his understudy will come on. IN THE MIDDLE OF A SONG! NOT even to mention Harvey Fierstein is in the freaking audience for the performance with Matt Morrison! She said it was really strange, and his understudy just started from where Davis left off. Go figure!
thats odd. but cool that matt was there
Wow. How unprofessional! That's quite the story there, Ebonic!
Poor dear. He must have been really sick. But I hope he doesn't pull one like that again!

Yeah my friend and i were talking about if it were someone like Nathan lane he would fight through it until the end of the act, the end of the scene, or the end of the SONG!

I'm not saying it was wrong of him, just strange. And i feel awful that Harvey was in the audience.
How was the understudy, did your friend say?
so he was sick, at least he made an attempt. Better than some others, who just don't show up.

it's live theatre & he's a human being-his professionalism shouldn't be called into question. Some illnesses can come on or worsen suddenly-if you work in theatre long enough,it can happen to anyone-even nathan....

She didn't say. She called me during intermission to tell me she was looking at harvey Fierstein and Matt Morrison, but didn't mention the understudy. Haha.
Another question, Ebonic (sorry) - what were the looks on both Morrison's and Fierstein's faces? When you find out anything, post it here!

I definately will! She cut me off really quickly. Cause the 2nd act was starting, but when she gets home we'll talk. I'll definately keep you updated!
When I saw FROGS nathan was not on the second act .. They said he was sick..

he probably should've not come in the first place, if he knew there was a strong risk of his not being able to finish the show, if only to show some consideration for his understudy. and if he's sick, he should devote his energy to getting better instead of potentially worsening his condition.

Maybe he wanted to try and pull a Harvey. Harvey got food poisoning and went in to do the Hairspray, but only got through at 1. Some people just hate to miss.

My friend said that he said he contracted this virus 5 minutes before he was supposed to go on. I'm pretty sure that's what she said, the cell phone wasn't the best reception.

superman,
Sounds like the poor guy got food poisoning.I don't know this actor, but there is a lot of pressure to go on-a lot of changes have to be made,& putting on an understudy isn't always that simple.I don't think you'd be so critical if you'd ever been in his position. He's just a guy-he got sick...believe me, no one wants to miss a performance...
sometimes you just never know when you're gonna be TOO sick to perform. These are people, not robots and they get sick just like you and me. It's unfortunate that it came to that, but sometimes it has to. I'm sure it could have been handled better- you never want to have to stop a show- but I guess he decided to make the call or the stage manager whoever it was told him to make the call. Whatever it was, it happened for a reason. And honestly, it IS previews and that DOES mean something. It means that the script and blocking are not yet frozen. It also means that mistakes are going to happen (hello, live theatre) and probably in higher numbers than they would after opening, and this was one. oops.
and you know what pisses me off? people who say "oh, well people like Nathan Lane would've fought through to the end of...whatever" Nathan Lane is no better than Daniel Davis or any other performer in this respect. The man is obviously ill, if he feels he truly can't go on (and by go on, I mean continue) then he won't. It's unfortunate that he had to stop when he did, but would you really want him barfing all over the stage? I mean, come on. Gr.
