sorry...i know that was kind of an angry rant but i'm tired.
yeah.
I'm no physician. Is it possible to catch laryngitis and feel its symptoms within minutes?
Secret soul,
I adore your SN. I think JANE EYRE has one of the best scores of all time and deserved the Tony for it's score. The quality and beauty FAR exceeds anything trite and simple in THE PRODUCERS. That's all. Nothing to do with this thread.

that is odd...
I guess this means he prolly won't be there when I see it tomorrow then, oh well.. c'est la vie...
I understand he may have reallyreally wanted to try and go on with the show anyway or etc...but...
It is really wierd that he would stop in the middle of a song though, and that he wouldn't realize to maybe get off stage before the song or even realize he prolly shouldn't perform at all and just rest, etc--the fact that he took time to address the audience and didn't run offstage in dire sicktomystomachness shows something (at the very least realize he is so-so felling and be prepared to leave such that he could get offstage before a song, etc)
I couldn't imagine watching a show where the actor stopped midsong and then addressed us saying he was going to leave...
hmmm...
I'm not being critical of the guy, he did get sick, but I'm just saying stopping in the middle of a song is pretty different--it probably also wouldn't be as tolerated during a regular run (i don't think, but who am i to know) as opposed to a preview, but previews end sooner than later and still shouldn't be treated with too much inferiority
thanks, munk. i feel the same :)

seriously, these things happen much more commonly than you think-you just don't always hear about them...sometimes it just can't be helped...

My friend said the understudy was wonderful and the rest of the show went smoothly. That's show business!
thanks capn :)

I agreed with every word,soul-appreciated that you were so emphatic...
John Hillner played Sam Carmichael in Mamma Mia! after David Keeley left.
capn: awwwwww, shucks *blushes*
phanty: I didn't know you were still around. I've been in and out for a while and I cannot keep track of who's here and who's not.

love your icon and your quotes, phantom(& sounds like davies' misfortune could be good luck for hillner-from all accounts already sounds like he came through with flying colours).
Thanks dude, words to live by.

Harvey supposedly got up and talked to the audience for 15 minutes or so while the understudy got ready.
I saw DD in "Wrong Mountain" one time when he was so sick with a cold that he could hardly talk. At the stage door after the show he looked awful but you couldn't tell it from his performance that night.
For whatever it's worth - I used to teach classes and I remember starting one class feeling fine but my throat felt 'funny'. While lecturing I kept going for the water bottle to clear it and then started trying to clear it with small coughs. 45 minutes into the class and I had almost lost my voice. I had to get someone in to finish it for me. The really scary part of this for me (I'm selfish) is that I have tickets for La Cage for next week and I want DD in it! When I got sick in that class I discovered I was coming down with flu and was sick in bed for 2 weeks.
Added strangeness - yesterday was Daniel Davis' birthday.

i was there - check out my post about it....
I saw LA CAGE yesterday afternoon, and Daniel Davis was brilliant. No sign of illness. I will try to post my full review later, but the Best of times are in that theatre.
If this was not still in previews I would say he shouldn't have done this...but since it is still in previews anything is allowwed(better now than then.)

Yeah leading--I think my friend said that but I couldn't hear her too well.
Poor guy. I understand these things happen, but to quit in the middle of a song...
Something similar happened when my wife & I saw Beauty & The Beast. The difference was the actor made no announcement. Act 1 was one actor & Act 2 was his understudy
We saw him in The Frogs & he was fine. He had a bad day is all. We will see La Cage on 1/31

The Nathan Lane example is a poor one. He's one of hte most unprofessional performers I've yet witnessed, and I real diva to boot.
ANYway...sucks about Mr. Davis. I'm really looking forward to see him perform this August, fingers crossed!

yea,verily,bal-there's a lot of nathan worshippers on the board.
I give DD credit for showing up. I'm not going to reopen a can of worms here, *cough..wonderful town..cough cough*, but you gotta give the guy credit for giving it a go. In an ideal world, yes, he would have at least waited until intermission, but sometimes, you can't help it, and he probably figured he'd let the audience get as much of the show with a healthy Georges as they deserved. So, I say get well DD and nicely done giving it the old college try. On a side note, I saw John Hillner in Crazy for you and he was fab. I bet he did a great job. Good luck to him this weekend.
Excuse me...the Nathan Lane example is a bad one? Whether or not I'm a fan, I have to say that you need to know what you're talking about before you say something that generalized.
The ONLY day Lane was out of the Frogs was when he fell and injured his legs badly toward the end of Act I and he was taken to the hospital. He missed ONLY the second half of that show and the evening show and was back to perform on Thursday in spite of a relatively serious injury
If you feel he is unprofessional because of his absences from the Producers, we need to hang up that old saw in the shed. He was suffering from a career threatening case of vocal polyps and stayed with the show much longer than he should out of dedication to the cast and the audience. He is NOT a diva...NOT unprofessional and is one of the few remaining theater animals in the business who shows total dedication.
Have you heard he's in London right now? He left a much deserved vacation a few days after the Frogs closed to bail out Mel Brooks and Susan Stroman who cast Richard Dreyfuss who left the show. Lane had 3 days to rehearse and opened in previews on time. Unprofessional diva? I think not.
As for Davis, he is an old pro on the stage and, whether we know the details or not, I'd be inclined to give him a break. He probably thought he could do this show and go onstage and realized he could not. It happens. He has no history as a diva or a difficult actor and has nothing to gain by ticking off the audience and leaving when he ISN'T sick.
