Stickit, thanks for starting this thread, but I have to go back to what you said in it: "A friend saw the final dress tonight and was very impressed, though not 100% sold on Audra as Billie."

After these all out raves from - by my count - everyone else in this thread, I'm curious about your friend's response. It seems so out of step with everyone else's (which is not to suggest it isn't valid). What did he/she think was missing and might it possibly have been fixed by first preview?

The Pecan Sandies- It was the first time I'd been able to see Audra perform live as well, but I only felt like I was watching Audra McDonald for the first few minutes of the show!! The pureness of her voice was gone and in no time at all -- like others-- I completely forgot who I was actually watching.

By the way, I think the only "bad" seats in the theatre are those closest to the stage, in which case people will have a great view of Audra's back. I was in the center, second to last row, and it was a GREAT seat.

I sat in the front row directly across near the bar and it was great! And I got those through rush, which isn't that crowded yet, btw...

I rushed and was on the side B-something. I was basically right at her profile, but I didn't feel like I missed anything. I wish I had been where April was though just to see the full stage picture because behind the set is a scrim and they light up various objects and stuff. I think it would have been more interesting to have them out in the open a la Spring Awakening or have them scattered throughout the theatre, but hey, it's whatever.

PS - for those interested. I used the discount code at the box office and not only did I save the telecharge fees (which to me are astronomical) but the seats they had to offer were WAY better than what was on telecharge when I looked up the same performance.
If you can physically go to the box office, you'll have much more choice

Just back from tonight's performance.

More of what everybody has said--an extraordinary performance by an extraordinary artist.

When she makes her way to the stage, she is Audra Mcdonald. Literally from the first breath and note she sings she becomes Billie Holiday. I don't think any amount of advance warning, spoilers or praise will diminish the leap your heart takes when she begins to sing--Audra has left the building.

I remember being amazed at the way Donna Murphy inhabited the role of Helen of Troy. No-one (I hope) could argue that Ms. Murphy isn't talented, but (perhaps) the most beautiful woman in History?? I was skeptical. Through sheer force of talent and will she made you see what she wanted you to see.

Audra McDonald is doing the same thing in 'Lady Day'--there is no need to suspend your disbelief--you will HAVE no disbelief. Except, maybe, a kind of wondering awe as to how a person can DO that???

The show is, perforce, dark--if this were fiction, one might scoff at the heavy-handed way in which the author piles on the painful, tragic memories--but there is not a single false or melodramatic moment--only a woman sharing memories and singing songs that make you weep.

See. This. Show.

There is some merchandise. Mugs, T-shirts. I'm not sure about posters, but I think. They're all that teal/seafoam color that is really pretty.

I caught this this weekend. I am so glad I did.

I know basically nothing about Billie Holiday, but I found I didn't need to - because she was right there in person on stage. Audra's performance was beyond amazing.

Oh and I didn't see the merch but I noticed last night in the Playbill store that they have window cards for sale there, so that probably means they have them at the theatre too.

Caught the matinee today. This will be a performance that I will never ever forget. Audra is brilliant. So glad I saw this. Picked up tickets for later in April on my way out. As someone already said, RUN don't walk to this one.

I have Circle Club seats, but what’s this about “festive attire”? I didn’t see anything about that online when I bought the tickets or in the E-mail confirming the purchase. I’m not opposed to participating; I’d just like to know what they’re hoping for from us.

Growl--

Folks sitting in the Circle Club are--according to the conceit of the show--the patrons of the nightclub at which she is performing.

It might be fun to wear a 1959-vintage suit--you might get a smile from Audra--but the night I saw the show, men were mostly wearing blazers and collared shirts and women were wearing cocktail dresses (and fur coats over nightgowns).

I think it would be jarring to show up in something too casual or too inappropriate to the time-line--a 'Wicked' T-shirt for example, would not be good.

Thanks, Addison. I actually just found the note about it on the show's official site, which I'd never looked at before. Now, if only I could find my vintage 1959 suit...

That would be fun, though.

I'll probably do a full suit or just blazer and tie. The idea of wearing jeans just doesn't appeal.
