Anyone else a Laufey fan? Her music (especially her most recent album) seems so well-suited to musical theater composing. Sweeping strings, jazzy orchestrations, emotional storytelling, etc.
Her music has that lush, melodic storytelling quality that reminds me of golden-age musical theater, but with a modern, moody twist. And with a possible crossover being telegraphed (among other things, Lin Manuel Miranda appeared onstage at her MSG show last night), I wonder if a Broadway score could be in her future.
Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if someone’s already tapped her for a musical-in-development. (Here’s hoping it’s not a lame musical adaptation of some chintzy romance movie - sorry, Ingrid Michaelson.)
Curious if anyone else sees the theatricality in her work or thinks similarly?
On Wednesday she had Rachel Zegler come out and duet with her. She’s very clearly a musical theater fan, if not an aspiring theater composer herself.
I really love her music and think she’s suited to do it. She clearly has the chops. I wouldn’t be surprised if she did some music for a play or a dance piece.

I really like Laufey, and I do think she has the skills to pull out a great MT score, but couldn’t agree more with this sentiment. PLEASE don’t give us The Time Traveler’s Wife: The Musical or some other BS.

it is VERY very preliminary--so itll likely take a few years at least. A musical based on a public domain novel. But I was quite excited/intrigued by the prospect
I’ve been saying she needs to write a musical. She’s a really beautiful songwriter and her most recent album shows versatility. If, as someone is suggesting, it’s on its way, I will certainly get a ticket to whatever the show is.
I thought she would've been a really great replacement for Connie in Just in Time.

I think she would be a great replacement for Helen J Shen in Maybe Happy Ending and I think she would sell tickets.
She would like to play Claire in HME, and to write a musical someday:
"I really, really want to write a musical... I feel deeply that I need to be in a musical before I write a musical. I don't have the experience of being in a show, I only have the outside viewership experience and my own songwriting experience. I feel that to understand the inner workings of a musical, I need to be inside someone else's art first. So yes, I have my own ideas. But I need to be in a show first before they can become anything more than voice memos."

I really appreciated how much she talked about her love of musical theater and her appreciation and respect for musical theater history and how much it's intertwined with the public consciousness. Would love to see her in MHE!

Connie Francis was an Italian American girl who grew up in a Jewish neighborhood and learned Yiddish so everybody thought she was Jewish. She was also a big belter. I don't see how Laufey is even remotely appropriate for the role.
