I have to say the producers / promoters of this show have done a great job of marketing it via 'alternative' media. It helps that it has a built in audience appeal for many who get their news/views from such sources rather than through traditional channels.
Plus it has Sheridan Smith giving a knockout performance and seemingly charming every single person who waits at the (improvised) stage door for her, along with many of her co-stars. That sort of thing goes a long way to building positive word-of-mouth.
I was at the first preview and the audience was very enthusiastic and up-for-it (and most of them a good deal younger than me, damn them!), but I wouldn't exactly say the response was akin to Beatlemania. I've been at other shows in previews where the response has been far louder. But by and large, it boded well for the show imho.
As for Michael Coveney: he tried a similiar schtick when he 'reviewed' Priscilla - i.e. insulting the audience and apparently being totally out of touch with the concept that the vast majority of people go to the theatre to be entertained. Poor soul having to sit among such misguided fools!
He doesn't even seem particularly well-informed either. I recall his Priscilla review referring to the '1996 film' (released in 1994) and describing Tony Sheldon as a 'long-standing Australian drag queen' rather than one of the finest and most respected stage actors his country has ever produced. So I have very little time for MC and the blog linked above helps to cement my opinion. The man comes across as an insufferable and priggish snob of the worst kind.
Seen some shows in my time....
