How could anybody guess that?
That's why they do screen tests. I'm sure whoever is seriously in the running for Cosette will test with Redmayne or at the very least read with him. The director would be insane not to have his "lovebirds" tested together before the cameras rolled on such a big film.

Honestly, I'd much rather they go with an unknown for Eponine than any of those names.
Edit: Or any big name, period.

Sorry for double posting, but Wood's representatives have said that she did not audition for the role. Spokespersons for Swift and Johansson did not respond to requests for comment.

If you read the actual article which mentioned that Emma Watson was not being considered for the role --
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2040804/BAZ-BAMIGBOYE-Francesca-Annis-sing-Ladies-Who-Lunch-number.html
( Please scroll down for the Hugh interview)
the denial was not directly attributed to Hugh. It seems it was Baz Bamigboye who did that, when he summarized the buzz about the movie casting towards the end of the article.
When Anne Hathaway's name was being prominently mentioned as already having been cast as Fantine, Hugh did say that while he knows her quite well that he did not want " to step on her toes" by confirming or denying the rumor on her behalf.

If the casting offices are seeing hopefuls at an open audition on December 10th, that entire process likely won't be completed until the end of the year (with callbacks, screen tests possibly with Hooper and Redmayne, etc.)
... meaning don't look for any announcements about the role of Cosette until Christmas at the earliest. And with the holidays, mostly likely not until early next year.

That schedule is so tight it's hilarious for a film this size (with significant post production). The start date sounds realistic. The end filming date being May 20th with a December release? And all the CG that will doubtlessly need to be done on probably hundreds of shots to create a period France with epic battles? Good luck with that. They'll either be paying through the nose with rush fees at CG animation houses, or they'll miss that deadline.
... or they'll do it cheaply and make everything happen in a 2-block radius with "uprisings" consisting of two dozen soldiers and students.
Time (and money) will tell.

I'm really surprised they haven't found ANYBODY for the adult Cosette yet. It's not that big of a part. She has two or three songs and disappears for most of the second half of the story.
December 7, 2012 is starting to look very iffy.

Posted: 12/2/11 at 8:41pmI don't understand why some think they can't make the Dec. 7 date. It's still in pre-production and was never going to start before February anyway. I've read end dates for filming this movie of either end of May or beginning of June. I don't think there's a lot of special effects in this (who knows how long the battle scenes will be) to post-production may not be that long. I don't think they would hold the movie over for another year.

I agree about the battle scenes probably not being that much of an issue for the filming. It was actually what was happening at the barricades ( not so much the actual shooting between the antagonists) among the characters that will get more screen time.
If they can get the studio recordings done before the start of principal photography, maybe the filming will probably follow a normal course? Filming outside locales without the principal actors can probably take place almost at a simultaneous pace? Modern post-production now use a lot of technology. I am hoping that the full support of Universal Studios ( who seems to be calling the shots - from casting to release date, so far), in terms of making available the technical talent and the big bucks, can hasten the process to get the movie ready for its December release.
I am glad the movie is being made with the support of a big movie studio!

I wonder if this means that Michele didn't get the part or she hasn't heard back yet from Tom Hooper:
"And from now on I might start to try to look into other things without singing to give my voice a little break."

If I remember rightly Hooper had a really tight shooting schedule for The Kings Speech so he's more than capable of getting things done, even if this film is a much bigger scale.
Redmayne is tied up in Richard II until the Feb 4th so assuming he'd be going straight into the film (who knows, they may not need hi for a while) he's going to working double time to do the play and prep for that too because they're going to have to get into the studio and record the vocals prior to shooting.

A quote from Lea Michele while promoting her new movie:
>>How many reporters have asked you about Les Miz while you've been promoting this movie?
A lot, I can't believe it. How embarrassing if I don't get it! [Laughs.] I was just talking to my publicist yesterday that it didn't used to be like this in the business: I've been up for a lot of movies before that I really wanted to get, but now, people know a lot more than they used to and it's all out there. Like, I remember when my co-star Dianna [Agron] was up for Spider-Man that the news was online, and I felt really uncomfortable for her. I mean, yeah, it's super cool that you're in consideration, but it's also a really private thing, and then if you don't get it … but I'm happy to be considered, and I'm happy to be in the realm of the other girls who are being considered because that's the coolest thing for me. When I heard the other people they were considering, I was like, Wow, this is awesome. I became like, a fan dork girl.

Hm. The Sun also couldn't even get his name right in the headline. It's not like they're the epitome of journalistic excellence, but so far no one else has broken this.
