This show's done well!
It's certainly one of the best British musicals to come along in a long time - and well done to Disney for being so open to let the Brits take control!
Let's hope Disney replace it with someone equally as amazing!
I was lucky enough to see it three times; I'm shocked it's closing (well, closed). I'm so sad to see it go. Au revoir, Mary Poppins...

"but why are people hating TLM?"
The costumes and sets were disappointing. Flounder wore a yellow t-shirt and shorts. Carlotta and the maids looked like half-people, half-chicken. Ariel's grotto did not look very nice and there WAY TOO MANY changes to the book. It just seemed to lack the charm and heart that the film had.
ETA: As I mentioned earlier I hope Disney is not making the same mistake they made 7 years ago when they closed 'Beauty and the Beast' to make room for a show that did not turn out so great.

While not reinventing theater this piece worked amazingly well on stage. The spectacular staging and dance made it just a charming and infections show to watch. I've seen it a few times both on Broadway and on tour as i would take friends to it. It never failed to enchant. It had a great run and I'm sure we will see many a regional production spring up to do it justice.

DId anyone go to the final performance today? If so did anything special occur? I was kind of hoping they would make a special closing Showbill for it.
tickets for this final performance were very hard to get. the entire orchestra & mezz. were blocked off for alumni, family, creative team, etc. Only the balcony was open to the public. I tried for three weeks to get some kind of pair of tickets and wasn't successful.
"but why are people hating TLM?"
Because it was the definition it "theatrical trash". It took something fantastic and reduced it to less than acceptable levels for a 2nd rate theme park.
BTW, I didn't attempt it but did they happen to sell SRO for the final show today??

I checked at about 1:15 PM today and there were two pairs of orchestra seats available for about $170.
sorry, but I wasn't looking to pay the big $$$ to see this again. I should have seen this show again a few weeks ago where I could have got tickets for about half price.
"By the way, I did heard Little Mermaid was a huge mess. One of these people were my cousin. Not to switch topics, but why are people hating TLM? From what I've seen, it looked fine."
Sounds like you didn't see the show. The scenery and costumes were horrible. I didn't care for the whole roller skating concept. They also changed the storyline by completely eliminating Vanessa. I was so, so disappointed in the Little Mermaid, especially since it was one of my favorite Disney movies. Fortunately I enjoyed the cast and the music. I only hope Disney isn't making the same mistake again.
" The tour sets were wonderful in their own right but nowhere near as magical as that on Broadway. And sadly one we won't likely see on stage again in future revivals. "
I'm sure this was mentioned before, somewhere--but having only seen the tour this past year (I mostly enjoyed it--and was impressed with the set)--just how much of the set was changed?
It's had a good run. In all honesty, I was more surprised when it closed in London when it did.
And yes, Little Mermaid was a mess--though I admit I like the new music (at least for Ariel and Eric, less keen on the added comic numbers)--though Menken did what he did with Hunchback and Beauty and the Beast and based those songs on music from his incidental score for the movies, and having grown up with the soundtracks, I already knew the melodies by heart.
Eric - I don't know much about the design of the set, but I know the tour was all set up like a pop-up storybook for easy touring. I believe the Bway production had a lot of stuff fly in from above.

I heard they brought Julie Andrews in and she flew over the crowd as Mary Poppins exited.
Clyde - Really? I never heard anything about that. Or are you messing with our heads?
Trust me - If that happened, you'd have heard about it by now.
It was my first time seeing the show, so I cannot say for certain if this was a different reading, but when Bert was walking the prosc3enium, when at the center he said something like "one last time walking above the rooftops." I imagine that had to be a slight variation, right?
Christian Borle, Rebecca Luker, Ashley Brown and Daniel Jenkins were all in the audience as were many or most of the 44 Jane and Michaels.

Were any speeches given after the performance? Special guests?

I'm happy to have seen the show last week for the first time and was able to take advantage of half price balcony tickets. I did have a pole to the left of me but it didn't intrude. It was nice when at the end Mary Poppins flew to our side of the balcony and was raised up in front of us!
It was a wonderful show but I wish I had seen it early in the run for the Temper Temper scene - that "Playing the Game" just didn't have the bite of TT.
Saw the final performance that was open to the public, Saturday night (the 2nd). THOROUGHLY ENJOYED all the way around! This was my third Disney show (Beauty and the Beast in April '07, Mermaid in January '08 before it). Jonathan Freeman (Jafar in the ALADDIN films) was my Cogworth, my Grimsby, and now, Admiral Boom and Bank Chairman! It was SO ridiculously charming. My sister and I had a blast! ALADDIN, my favorite Disney feature from boyhood, I hope, holds up its end and provides the magic!

Truly one of Disney's theatrical gems, Mary Poppins was an old good old fashioned classic time at the theatre. The experience of catching the show twice was completely Magical I still to this day,it was one of Disney's grandest projects for the stage! I'm also glad I caught the show before Temper Temper was cut. Playing the game didn't have the same thrill.

I went to the box office a few hours prior to showtime to see if they were doing standing room (something that I know that this theatre does, having stood a few years ago for this amazing show.) When I got to the box office window and asked the guy there, his response was "we've never done standing room for this show." Something that I found a little odd, only because like I said, awhile back I did do standing room for this show and I know that The New Amsterdam offers it.
yep, the New Amsterdam/Poppins(and when the Lion King was there) has standing room. It was sold frequently during Poppins' first two years and consistently when Lion King was playing there.
