Lackawanna Blues is a revival! It easily meets the criteria for the Classics Rule - especially since there was even a film adaptation of the play 16 years ago.

Thank you for the correction! I knew about the HBO film but never realized it was an adaptation...I think I thought (for some strange reason) that the upcoming MTC production was itself an adaptation of the film. Looks like I had it backwards!

They should have gone all out and just made it "Doubtfire!" Been far too long since we've had a musical end with a "!".

What? Why? To differentiate from the movie? To make a transrights-conscious culture forget they are buying tickets a show that hinges on the idea that a man wearing a dress is inherently funny? This makes no sense."
What does a man in a dress have to do with trans rights?
Just my opinion, but Mrs. Doubtfire hits differently than say, Some Like it Hot because Robin Williams looks like an actual woman, unlike Jack Lemon and Tony Randall who are obviously men in dresses and makeup.

Nothing IMO, but like Tootsie, before the shutdown (Mrs.) Doubtfire received backlash from those who felt it was offensive.

I agree it is a complicated subject that cis people won’t necessarily understand and it is important to hear the concerns of the trans community of these portrayals. The portrayal of men in a dress is linked to violence against trans women.
That being said, I think Doubtfire is the least dependent on the “man in a dress” trope.

I mean, if you break it down it's a character using one of his characters "Doubtfire" to get his family back, where as Tootsie came off a bit weird because it was a jerk cis straight male who portrays a woman to then steal a job from women... so yeah...
But that said, dropping the "MRS" and changing the color seems like a weird change. Just own what the story is and have an answer for why this show is relevant to today's audiences.

The "Mrs" aside, I actually prefer the new color scheme. The original pink playbill was fine, but it never really stood out to me. I think their new (blue/white/gold) branding works much better from a purely aesthetic sense (if I remember correctly, the Seattle premiere used a pale green as their primary color, so it isn't the first time they've changed their branding).

It will not matter to twitter but I do think there's a difference between Tootsie's convoluted attempt at feminism and Mrs. Doubtfire which plays more like a typical farce. The humor isn't entirely about a man dressing as a woman and what he gleans from the experience but a character (that is known to everyone) being in disguise.

Yeahh, I couldn't help but notice there is no cast list on the site right now. The two actual kids are most likely not coming back.

Yes, there is no cast list on the website right now, and yes, there will be at least one change made to the cast because Doreen Montalvo died in October.
However, the new homepage photo - which reminded me a bit of the marketing for Groundhog Day - shows the entire original principal cast pre-shutdown, including Scarpaci, Flynn, and Sell, so I don't know if this says something (or will say something)... McClure is the only confirmed cast member at this point to my knowledge.

I’ve never understood the backlash (specifically with this show/film, against Tootsie makes more sense) because...nobody is identifying as, downplaying, mocking, etc...trans-ness. The focus is not gender or sexual identity. None of my loved ones who are trans seemed to understand either.
There are also some things that I didn’t get at first but have come to understand (such as a common argument against drag performance, but that’s another story). I just think that those forcing this topic onto this show is really missing the mark, and inadvertently, weakening their own stance/argument.

Part of me gets it, like a man dressing as a woman for comedy, but at the same time it's funny and entertaining and heart-warming story.
Also, I'm friends with an ensemble member who confirmed they are coming back, so I'd assume 99% of the original cast will be there. Maybe the kids will change or maybe they won't.
