Margo Martindale Joins ‘August: Osage County’

EXCLUSIVE: Margo Martindale has joined the cast of August: Osage County. The Emmy winner will play the jaded sister of Meryl Streep in the feature adaptation of Tracy Letts’ family clan play. Martindale’s character is Mattie Fae Aiken, the wife of Charles Aiken, played by Chris Cooper, and the sister of Violet Weston, played by Streep. The actress will start filming in Oklahoma on September 24. Martindale won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 2011 for her role on FX’s Justified. Julia Roberts also stars in August: Osage County as Violet’s daughter Barbara. Abigail Breslin, playing Barbara’s daughter, recently joined the film, as did Juliette Lewis. John Wells is directing August: Osage County, Letts is writing the adaptation of his Pulitzer and Tony-winning play. George Clooney and Grant Heslov are producing along with Jean Doumanian and Steve Traxler. The Weinstein Co. is financing and distributing August: Osage County. Martindale is repped by the Gersh Agency.

I hope so. Wouldn't mind to see Dianne Wiest in the role, but Martindale is a wonderful actress and an inspiring choice.

This is possibly the best way this could go (I think even above the on-the-nose Kathy Bates). She'll find comedy in the darker parts and a darkness in the comedy. WOOHOO!

Well, this is unexpected and just about perfect.

You know what I really adore her in?

"Paris, je t'aime."

Her performances makes that vignette one of the best in a series of terrific vignettes.

I still love her in the short lived "The Riches". Very underrated show and was disappointed when it was cancelled.

Jordan, I must say I'm in no way saying Julia and Meryl aren't VERY talented actresses because of course they are. I actually find myself defending Julia to "acting snobs" a lot. I honestly feel they're both almost entirely miscast. Meryl, less so, but I can already see her caluclated performance. I still have hope and want them to be amazing, but I think Wells will have to be strong and direct them both against type.

Cooper and Martindale? Hell yes.

I really wish they announced who's playing Ivy already. So happy to see Margo Martindale joining this wonderful cast, she's gonna be great as Mattie Fae, can't wait to see her scenes with Streep and Cooper, they'll be explosive.

I was watching Political Animals the other day and it struck me that Carla Gugino would be a good Ivy.

And can you imagine what Sigourney Weaver's Barbara would be like?
