I guess you could say it's the shows that go in and not the theatre, but why would a theatre in the middle of time square and with a hotel attached to it(meaning more customers) not have more hits. We can't really say on your feet is a hit since it hasn't recouped, but it is one of the longest runs since Millie or drowsy.

Millie was a flop.
The Marquis is not as bad as other ones, like the Lyric, for example; which has had all its shows flop since opening.

Not at all.
Although she's perhaps unloved (like her modern sister, the Minskoff, a block away) She's the second daughter, with the second choices - behind the Palace - in the Nederlander family. Furthermore regarding connections to the huge hotel above, it's been my impression that there have been few arrangements to package the hotel with the separately-operated theater.
The theatre itself is fine, with the more generous leg room expected with a modern house. And don't underestimate the current tenant "On Your Feet" which I suspect will recoup and spin-off a lucrative tour.
Did the "Evita" revival recoup?

Wait... how was Millie a flop? It ran for two years and got a bunch of Tony nods.
Agree with MarkBearSF that On Your Feet will likely recoup. Not sure about Evita.

It didn't recoup its investment

it actually won several Tonys (including Best Musical). And yet still flopped. I wonder how many Best Musical Tony winners have flopped

I've always thought that the lack of a marquee at the Marquis was the reason. I was excited about the brand new one they put up on 46th st and I think it will make a big difference to future shows, however I think they need a big marquee up on 45th street too. It would be worth the money spent on a marquee on 45th st for a show to put it in it's budget if it meant it would recoup in the end.
Also it's not the biggest theatre on Broadway, but when you walk in, it sure feels like the most cavernous for some reason. It always looks empty even when it's not. I liked what they did with the FOllies revival by covering up all the walls, but even that didn't work.
HOWEVER... I heard a little rumor that Disney Theatricals is thinking of moving ALaddin to the Marquis because it's already a hit, and they want their flagship New Amsterdam to house FROZEN. I think that's what the Marquis needs.

Just imagine how much more 'significant' feeling the Marquis would be if that Kodak sign outside the Marquis was actually the Marquis for the Marquis? As long as I can remember since I have been in the city (since 1993), its been a Kodak branded sign- do they own it?

Frozen has already been announced for the St. James Theatre.

I have been repeatedly lectured that theaters are not cursed . Therefore, this cannot be true.

When you demolish 5 theatres in your place, you're bound to be cursed.
Wasn't the Marriott required to build a theatre in their place? They should have been required to build at least 3, if not 5 theatres throughout their new complex.
