An amazing show that will be sorely missed! The show is just too expensive to run.

When it closes, it will have played over 1500 shows and run over 3.5 years. I loved the show and parts of it brought me undescribable joy, but it had a good life and introduced us to some great actors.

This came out of nowhere, pity it really is a great show, Was the running cost that high?
Plus lets hope this isn't making way for the purely awful soul sucking mess that is Chocolate Factory!

Even though this had an amazing run, I am so saddened by this news - more so than I have ever been by any closing announcement. I seriously love this show so much.

Disappointed, but not surprised based on Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. This show has a giant place in my heart and it was truly a special experience that deserved so much more at the Tony's. So thankful to see the OBC

One of the great shows on Broadway. Loved the show. It will be a sad day when it closes.

What a shame. I think this has been a long time coming since their numbers started to drop, but it's still such a shame.
I saw the 5th preview, which was Milly Shapiro's first performance. I had heard good things about the show going in, but the show far exceeded my expectations. I was in the front row, which for this kind of show was totally thrilling. To me, this is definitely in the top 5 musicals of the decade so far. I will forever be furious that it didn't win best musical (not trying to start another argument, just stating my opinion), but I'm happy that they had such a successful run.

This is so sad. I hadn't even seen the Broadway production yet. I'll be sure to catch it before it closes. Congratulations to this wonderful show on a wonderful run.

Does this mean the movie will start production soon like what a website said last August?

Totally agree with Rosscoe. Some people simply get to caught up with shows in general to the exclusion of the real world. Entertainment is fun and an escape. It was never meant to be a substitute for reality as per Jose Lee's post.
We saw the show and enjoyed it. We liked some shows more but liked this nonetheless. When we left the theater, we stepped back into the real world having enjoyed ourselves and escaped the real world and it's problems for a few hours. To us that is what theater is supposed to be:an escape from problems for a few hours. We never did or will ever let it totally dictate our lives

Literally crying like crazy right now. Like someone said this show has brought so many new stars to light. Especially those wickedly talented little girls. It was only a week ago when I made that thread about being scared for the closure of Matilda and now it's coming to life. I just hope this isn't that last of Matilda on Broadway. I could see a really cool deaf west version of the show happening. I hope the London production keeps a steady pace. Love you Matilda. "Yes, they'd found eachother"

Also I don't k ow how long the contracts are for the current cast members, but I'd love if some of the original cast came back for the last three months or so, like Bertie or Lauren and even some ensemble members.

" seeing Bertie is still wandering in the back of my mind, and Im sure he'll be involved with the closing of this mindblowing show in some form or another but he's my idol and I pray that one day I can see him do Trunch

Maybe Jose is so surrounded by death every day that he has become numb to it. I can somewhat understand it and also understand him being sad about a show closing. I used to care when one closed. I know it is part of the deal - shows open and shows close - but I have seen so many good shows close prematurely over 50 years, I simply no longer care.I see it and go on to the next one.

I can't say I didn't see this coming but it doesn't make it hurt any less. At least it's closing on a day I can go to New York and I'll be in the audience for the final show.

My gut tells me that they might bring them back for the last night, but only during curtain call with the scooters. But I think if the London production were to close, then without a doubt, I think the producers would have to bring Bertie and Lauren back.

I'm heartbroken. This show means so much to me. I'll definitely have to go back to the Shubert to bring my younger family members who haven't seen it yet and on closing night.

Matilda is following in the same footsteps as Billy Elliot, made off like gangbusters for the first year and half/ two years then got to the point where it became to expensive to run. Sad news and i'm going to miss the show.
