Broderick? Now I can make an informed decision....count me out! He's the only performer I've witnessed to become less and less talented over the course of his career.

Not one of my favorite plays, but it is an interesting cast and I will be buying a ticket. As I've posted before, I would not see it in early previews but wait a few weeks since it seems to take Broderick a while to get his character set..but he does.

When I saw him in the horrible "The Philanthropist," I had to restrain myself from going onstage and smacking him for taking the same horrible role after role.
I will never go see anything he is in. Ever. Ever.

Such a shame to hear Broderick's work has become so stale. I think he was great in things like ELECTION and YOU CAN COUNT ON ME. His stage reviews--both from critics and audiences--have been abysmal following THE PRODUCERS. I wonder if a director can work with him to improve.
UUnfortunately, I agree casting him is the nail in the coffin in what was always going to be a hard sell. I'm definitely curious to hear whom they had in mind originally.

"Matthew Broderick is confirmed" are the four scariest words in the theatrical vocabulary.

I would have gone with "Patti LuPone sees you" but OK.

Can anyone even hint at who was originally sought after for the role?
Even a PM will do... I'm just curious.

I will always love Matthew Broderick for his film work, BRIGHTON BEACH, and HOW TO SUCCEED. I didn't think he was that great in IT'S ONLY A PLAY, but I adored him in NICE WORK. His underplaying was, for me, what really made Judy Kaye and McGrath work, but I've never found him as abysmal as some people here have. Am I the only one?

i have to chime in with AHTC
sorry so many of you have had bad experiences with Broderick
my only two live experiences with Matthew were
How to Succeed(opposite sarah jessica)
Nice Work if you can get it (opposite Kelli)
in the case of how to succeed, he surpassed imo the fantastic work of robert morse
acting, comic timing, singing and dancing were all terrific
In nice work, his acting and comic timing were spot on, singing was fine, and dancing had definitely slowed a few steps and he did not look young and fresh anymore... he looked tired.
Im grateful for his work in these roles and The Producers (saw on bootleg dvd), and hope someone can challenge him to regain whatever the spark was he had in the past.....

Im looking forward to this for Annaleigh and Julie White! They are bold actors and maybe they can break him out of his shell...although Nathan Lane couldn't even do that lol

Feel badly for Annaleigh. This is a breakout and they gave her a dud.

I too have never experienced a performance by Broderick that would support the disgust expressed on this board. I often wonder after reading some posts if I saw the same performances others saw. With the exception of the very awful The Philanthropist, most shows have been enjoyable, partly because of Broderick and partly for the other performers. I especially loved him in Nice Work and thought the critics were way off in their reviews.

Whelp, that just confirmed that I'm not seeing this show. Words cannot express how much I loathed his soulless, lifeless, and joyless portrayal in "It's Only a Play." I don't think I'll ever be able to, in good conscience, pay money for a show that he is appearing in.

In the last three shows I saw him in (The Producers, The Odd Couple and It's Only a Play), he was exactly the same. Sorry but Leo Bloom, Felix Unger and whatever character he played in It's Only a Play are not in any way similar, yet Broderick played them all exactly the same and said his lines exactly the same in each play; that sort of nasally, monotone, over-enunciated, stiff, non-expressive talk that he has been doing since The Producers. He was PAINFULLY unfunny in both The Odd Couple and It's Only a Play --I mean amateur theater bad. Until he finds a way out of that acting style rut he has fallen into, he will never be good on stage again.

I just find his acting style to be really complacent. He always seems bored and unexcited. And in Nice Work he's playing a drunk... yet he seemed to be asleep the whole show.

Here are a few things that would be a better replacement for Broderick.
1) A bag of hair
2) A pile of shoelaces
3) A sleeping baby
4) An unsharpened pencil
5) A copy of the script laid on the floor
6) A stack of used Band-Aids
7) An old rake

I wonder how BREAKING BAD would have turned out if he had accepted the producer's offer.
