Hey, I love Stritch. But it is the perfect example.
Explain more in-depth what you mean re: Stritch, Jordan. I find that fascinating.
Arthur Laurents wrote the liner notes for the 2003 cast recording of Gypsy. In it he says only good things about how Bernadette Peters played Rose. So im guessing he liked her performance in the show
we all knew he has probably ripped them all a new ***hole on many occasions for no apparent reason
On the contrary. He never rips anyone a new ***hole unless they are the Villain or unless he needs a Victim.
At all other times, he is wonderful company, as long as you allow him to be better than you or smarter than you or more powerful than you.
Ah good to know. Thanks PalJoey. I had assumed he was awful to work for but I guess he is fine as long as you treat him like God.

Come on guys lets give Bernadette a break..she was trying something new and she almost nailed it..She is just to damn cute and that works against her in this part.
I have seen Tyne Daly -Betty Buckley- Linda Lavin and Patti Lupone in this and for my money TYNE is the best of these by a long shot. If you go by the cast cd you will be unimpressed because she recorded this with a bad throat. But in the theater when she sang the Everythings Coming up Roses and the last FOR YOU AND FOR ME and pointed at June (christa moore) with this vicious look in her eye,,,it scared the hell out of me
Everyone else uses that ending to waive the hands in the air like wow I just sang a great song but TYNE just pointed and with a windmill in the background and Herby and Louise hugging it was one of the scariest looks I ever saw ..Patti was more like hey I am Great and Linda Lavin was just wrong .Betty was 2nd best to me she just nailed it but nothing as good as TYNE

Agree with all who have defended the Mendes production. I think Bernadette Peters' different look/interpretation totally worked for the role, and perhaps (as some have said here) was actually more like the real Rose. I thought John Dossett was excellent. The most recent revival was overrated. That doesn't mean it was bad, but geez what was ALL THAT FREAKIN' FUSS over Patti LuPone? Her performance was basically what I envisioned when I heard Patti LuPone would be playing Rose.

Agreed Theaterfan. Patti was Patti, she did exactly what I expected her to do. She was great, I would not say miscast in any way, and undoubtedly deserved the Tony Award, but I never saw the "revelation" that many people seemed to think she was.
Bernadette was the best Rose ever. Period. Beautiful and sexy. Sadly she was a lot better at the beginning of the run than at the end. At the end of run she was playing some sort of mean, ambitious lady.
Tyne Daly was the worst: nothing glamorous, nothing campy, no pandering to my need to worship. She didn't pander to
ANY gay cult so she was terrible. She was acting like she was in some sort of play instead of a glitzy fluffy Diva worship musical.
Terrible.
Tyne Daly is so ugly too. She didn't act like a STAR.. she just acted like the character. BORING AND WRONG.
TD90016, did you see either Tyne or Bernadette?

Bette Midler was awesome in the TV version. Only I wish she had played it a little BIGGER. The stupid director probably forced her to underplay the whole thing.
Too bad Lucy is six feet under, she would have wiped out the memory of Lansbury in GYSPY, just like she did in the stupendous movie verison of MAME.
I saw the Bernadette Gypsy. Didn't see the others, but am well familiar with the movie. I loved Bernadette Peter's portrayal of Mama Rose, and I totally resonated with the NY Times review of the show: for the first time you actually understood why a guy like Herbie fell in love with her and stuck by her. Bless all the other interpretations of Mama Rose, who all took Ethel Merman as the standard, but Bernadette's more vulnerable, feminine take worked extraordinarily well for me.

Well then what was wrong with Angela Lansbury's Rose?

I was just coming here to bring up Lansbury, you beat me to it, ljay.
Though I was too young to have seen her (and by that I mean several years away from being born) from the few clips that have been seen on Youtube and just from what I imagine her to have been I would assume that Lansbury was a very enticing Rose and probably very much unlike Ms. Merman. I'm sure those who were around at the time and saw the production could probably fill us in with some memories of her performance.

How many of them did you see?
No offense, but Lansbury while young in that photo, isn't sexy. She has a school marm quality that isn't raw or sexy.
Bernadette was the first Rose I found sexy-having something a man would lust.
When Patti lifted her skirt to reveal her ham hock to entice Herbie, I was like, "for realz?" I don't think so. However, I went along with it.
I also liked David Burtka better than Tony Yazbeck. There I said it. Burtka was sweeter.
I love how some of you people are acting like Herbie is some gorgeous hunk of a man. I saw no reason to believe a man like Gaines wouldn't want a woman like LuPone.
I think Lansbury happens to like VERY attractive in that picture.

Maybe YOU don't think Boyd Gaines is a sexy hunk of a man, but I do.
I think Angela was very attractive when she was younger, but rarely have a seen a picture of her that radiates sex appeal.
I never said Angela wasn't attractive-shes adorable, she just never radiates any sexuality that I've ever seen.
