Midler doesn't think she has 8 shows a week in her... — Page 3

Herman did OK LuPone as Dolly. I believe in a Variety article where he assessed options for Dolly, he said shed be great. The revival directed by Jack O'Brien tried getting off the ground but Herman would only approve the original staging. Therefore, O'Brien and LuPone didn't continue with it.

I'm sure Herman approved LuPone only because he's scared to say no to her. It's like Sondheim. He never has a bad word to say about a poor casting choice. When asked who his favorite is, he always says the current one.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

ljay, there was more to the Herman/LuPone decision than that.

Herman approved LuPone but didn't approve of the direction the director wanted to take the show in.

As I said one post above yours, there was more to it than that. But thanks for reposting what someone else said, loveracism.

'I think the likelihood of Lansbury doing DOLLY! is greater than Midler OR LuPone at this point.'
Midler's comment about not being able to handle 8 shows per week made me appreciate Angela Lansbury's commitment, stamina a passion for the craft even more.
Nevermind that she's pushing 90, the lady has just completed a 6-months tour on the other side of the world, set to headline The Chalk Garden revival on Broadway this fall and is in talks to star (according to a rumor) in Sydney production of The Visit next year. She truly is a bionic woman.
Cicely Tyson would be another, if she's indeed 88-year old.
As for Midler, I think she'll be great in either role - Dolly or Mame.

Herman should just smack LuPone in the face and say NO!
That will teach her!

Why would Herman and Sondheim be afraid of Patti Lupone? I have always thought of her as a very funny person. I think it would be a riot to hang out with her for a day.

Lupone has a flatulence problem! Not fun to hang out with! Trust me, she's as bad as Ina Garten!

"Why would Herman and Sondheim be afraid of Patti Lupone?"
Because she's been known to stop shows and yell at audience members.

LOLZ i wasn't on this board when that happened but i am guessing there was a lengthy discussion about it. Do you guys think it was unprofessional of her to do that or do you support her decision to stop the show?

She wasn't the first to do it. Glenn Close did it during Sunset Boulevard, but she didn't scream at the audience. She finished her song, then stepped downstage and said "We can either continue with the show or have a press conference."

Patti was well within her rights to yell at the man taking pictures. She is a hot blooded Sicilian. You can tell when you hear it that once the man is removed she calms down. She was exactly right. "We're losing our public manners".

I think you guys are right in saying there won't be a new musical from him.

Herman will be D.E.A.D. within the next year, I predict.
Lupone within the next five years!
I know these things!

"B) It was during the 2008 great recession/crisis. No shows were doing well."
Yea. Remember? That's when they were filling Wicked with half price tickets from TKTS, and Jersey Boys, was 2/3 empty every night. Right?

So you are saying you know what Sondheim or Herman are thinking always? Or you project that you know more than Sondheim or Herman?
BTW, you've got some nerve saying "Can we please have an age appropriate Dolly? We need to believe that Dolly still has enough about her to attract a man's attention. Enough with the menopausal Dollys."
and in the next line saying "Imelda Staunton for Dolly"
People call Patti LuPone fans crazy. The ones that hate her are just plain mad.
