The show has already recouped on the West End...
"Miss Saigon has already recouped its investment through advance ticket sales and it doesn’t even open until next week."

I really do hope Eva comes with the show. Apparently, her performance is breathtaking.
Eva Noblezada's American, so that won't be a problem.

The reviews are positive and theaters seem to magically open up for shows like this. 2015 is the 40th anniversary of the US evacuation of Saigon. It's a simple tie in.
(Plus, as a social studies teacher at a performing arts school, musical tie ins with historic al events make me squeal.)

Posted: 5/21/14 at 10:37pmTo answer LizzieCurry's query about: Where's the new show that will employ the current generation of Asian talent? It's already here: 'Here Lies Love' at the Public. But I'd love to see 'Allegiance' join the Broadway mix. And, in fairness to 'Miss Saigon,' it opened on Broadway in 1991 and closed in 2001. It hasn't been revived here since. But the London revival boasts Jon Jon Briones, a Filipino actor who's getting raves at the Engineer. With any luck, he and Eva Noblezada will re-create their roles on the Great White Way, or 'Miss Saigon' can mint new stars with the Broadway production.

What is the advance? You can't recoup through an advance because that number is before expenses and an advance is spread out over weeks if not months of performances. It advance may equal or double the start up budget but no way can it qualify as recoupment.
Sold 4,4M pounds first day

Posted: 5/22/14 at 1:28amLet's see if Eva Noblezada survives her BS 4-performances/week schedule. I heard some bootlegs and she's already sounding ragged. This girl screams and is always on the brink of going off key.

Posted: 5/22/14 at 3:21amGosh. Cameron Mackintosh sure is reliving his youth these days. I'd love to see the production transfer, though. I'll probably get **** for this, but I think it's a far stronger show than Les Mis. I fully admit that Les Mis' score is stronger and more consistent, but trying to compact that massive Victor Hugo novel into one evening at the theatre is exhausting. So many ****ing character and no time to actually build up any dramatic tension before sailing on to the next big pop ballad. Miss Saigon has plenty of spectacle as well, of course, but at its heart is what I think is a far more compelling and emotionally engaging story.

Posted: 5/22/14 at 7:21amAgreed, HorseTears. I've always preferred MISS SAIGON over LES MIS. It's much more intimate than LES MIS and it improves on the plot of Puccini's MADAME BUTTERFLY.

Posted: 5/22/14 at 10:10amMiss Saigon was the first Broadway show I ever saw, during a field trip in middle school, so I have a very special place for it. I remember not being into it all that much at first, but that second act really got me. I would love to see this on Broadway again, can't wait!

Posted: 5/22/14 at 11:49amI, too, am very confused by the recoupment announcement. The only explanation I can think of the advance so large he's sure they will recoup. No way they could recoup in previews alone.

Yes Cameron is purely creating headlines based on the advance (much of which is agencies allocations)
Its a hit but not the sold out for months hit that is being made out

The show has recouped. Agents have had notifications of extensions weeks ago so have committed to more stock and the 4.4 million that the production cost was pretty much in the bank from ticket sales before it opened. Encore Tickets, there was an article, bough £1.5 million of tickets for the first booking period and have likely prebought more along with other agents now more performances are available.
It's certainly not a sellout, the theatre is large, but Cameron is clever and has built a solid advance whilst having stock to sell for last minute sales to create a buzz and tickets still actively selling.
I don't think the success of this should be knocked given the west ends recent run of big musical closures...

Exactly. It's semantics, but I believe he means the show is ON THE ROAD to recouping. I bet it even will fully recoup in a matter of weeks. But it's mathematically impossible to recoup the day after Opening.
And extensions have nothing to do with it. A show can release new blocks of tickets for years and never recoup.

Extensions have everything to do with it if your a hit with people buying up in advance. Through extending to end of 2015, many agents will pre purchase for peak times putting large sums of the bank. No good if your a show that nobody is buying up for but people are for this show.
Regardless it's not a ploy for headlines, the shows a success and has recouped its investment aswell as making a profit on the weekly cost to run the show. Let's take a minute to congratulate a success in the theatre, it's a rare thing. All I'm saying!

I don't see why Cameron Mackintosh would lie about recouping his £4M-something investment. I would bet they created financial models using advance sales info, operating costs, projections for ticket demand that demonstrate the show is in the black.
Plus, Mackintosh is doing this revival on the cheap. Wasn't the budget for the 1989 production much higher after inflation is taken into consideration?
Should it come to New York, I hope they consider another actress for Kim and that they undo some of the awful and unnecessary lyric changes used in this current revival.

Its not lieing, its just being creative with headlines.
He also said it was the biggest selling show ever when tickets went on sale, emails were sent saying it was sold out until late Summer....tickets can now easily be got in all parts of the theatre over the next few months.
He is the king of spin and creating a buzz. Not necessarily a bad thing but always take with an element of salt
The fact it only cost £4.4million to stage says a lot about this is more a remounting with a few tweets and not a full on revival

Posted: 5/25/14 at 1:02amI still don't understand why Kim is de facto double cast in London. Lea Salonga did 8 shows a week for the world premiere until she developed vocal issues but it seems so dumb for today's top billed Kim to only do 4 performances a week. It's unfair to the alternate as well who won't be eligible for awards recognition even though she's Kim 50% of every week the show runs.

jsg03jd, Have you actually seen the show yet? It's a little tacky to keep ranting about how much you think Eva sucks in this role if you haven't actually seen her do the full show. Judging her on 2 audio clips from youtube is pretty tasteless if you ask me.
I also am confused as to why you keep assuming Eva is not seeing a vocal coach. I'm very sure she has been assigned to one. That "yelling" that you THINK you hear, isn't yelling. Eva seems to use her belt more than Lea, I see nothing wrong with that. After all, Eva seems to be getting rave reviews.
It has also been noted that Eva is doing more than 4 shows a week at this current time. She may settle into 4 shows a week as time goes on, but at this present time, she is doing more than what was originally announced.
My guess is she is doing 4 shows a week because obviously the score is demanding and Lea Solonga has been vocal about her vocal trouble with this role....It seems to me that the producers are learning from the past and are trying not to overload Eva at such a young age with such a huge role. Will this cost her an Olivier nomination? Maybe, but she has a bright future and the most important thing she should worry about now is keeping herself healthy for her long run.

What's with the constant casting of Filipinos for this show? Has a Vietnamese actress ever played Kim? I know it's acting and all that jazz, but it seems they only cast Filipinos. I guess Lea Salonga's casting set a precedent.
