Ok look at these pictures then let us know if they wont pass for a married 20's woman?
Renee Olstead - Actress/Jazz Singer
Vanessa Hudgens
Jojo
Emma Watson
Kristen Stewart
Most of these actors are trying to shed their girlie images they were associated with for sometime now. And most if not all will be over 20 by the time filming starts. Vanessa hudgens and Kristen Stewart would certainly be over 22 years of age by then.
In La Bamba, the music was all performed by Los Lobos, not LDP.

Yes i know but LDP is a very well established Stage Actor as well.
In 1996, Phillips made his Broadway debut as the King in Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's The King and I. Phillips won a Theatre World Award and was nominated for both a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for his performance.
what about jonathan groff ( spring awakening) as chris?
lou diamond phillips has starred on the revival of the king and i as the king and he did a really good job on it. i saw him in it.

Aaron Tveit could be a great Chris if his profile was upped before filming started. I always imagined Chris to be in his early-mid 20s, wonder if Henry Cavill can sing lol! Lou Diamond Phillips could also be a great Engineer I like that

eh i was partly kidding about Jackie Chan... a part of me thinks he could possibly make a good engineer... he'd probably be less on the darker side unless he got a REALLY REALLY good director to help him... whatever...
and while we never truly know Chris' age... i always felt he should be in his early 20s.. as much as I loved many of the Chris' that have performed the role and that I have seen.. none of them ever looked the part... the ONLY person who ever came close to having the most perfect look for Chris (and acting and voice too) was Steve Pasquale... he was an EXCELLENT Chris..
and the suggestion of James Kyson Lee or Daniel Dae Kim is actually pretty decent for Thuy

Chris must be AT LEAST 21. In Why God he clearly states he re-upped, so assuming he joined/was drafted into the Marines at 18, that is hios minimum age. 25 would be a safe bet. John, on the otherhand, would be a bit older. Base on his position and rank, he treats Chris not only as his best friend, but also like a kid brother whom he watches over. Since the stage production generally kept John as a black man, I would assume the film would do the same. Though the age of the Engineer is never made clear, I would say he should be in his mid-30s. When he tells Kim that they refer to him him as her brother after he learns about Tam, it's clear that he believes he looks young enough to be her brother, and mid-30s would be the oldest he could be for it to be remotely believable.

I'd like the guy who played Cece (sp?) in Dreamgirls for John.
I agree that Chris has to be at least 21 (I was thinking mid-20s) and the Engineer is probably 30s at the oldest. Like I said, you could probably figure out his age if you did the math because it sounds like Bien Dien Phu happened when he was a kid or a teenager.

The Battle of Bien Dien Phu was in 1954. So about 20 years have passed. The Engineer was old enough to understand what was going on (based on his commentary of it), so he was most likely in his early teens, which would put him in his mid-30s.

"I remember in The Making of Miss Saigon they showed a Vietnamese woman auditioning for Kim, but they decided she looked too mature for the role. "
As I remember, she couldn't sing worth a dime either. The musical director tried to work with her, encouraging her, teaching her vocal techniques but to no avail.
my dream cast :
kim = charice. best vocally and could be a revelation in acting since she's suffered a lot when she was younger and could definitely draw out some great motivations from that. i saw her acting in a tv drama about her own life story and she was pretty good in it. she looks very young but so did lea salonga when she first auditioned for london. remember asians always look younger for their age.
engineer = lou diamond phillips, if theyre keeping his character as " half-breed" or b.d. wong, if they want a more vietnamese look and if hes still interested in doing it since i remember him making big waves about not being considered for the role when jonathan pryce was cast on broadway.
chris = daniel radcliffe would look perfect with charice and im sure he can sing since hes supposed to do "how to succeed in business.." plus he's got the box office pull. or jonathan groff , great voice, all american look , age-appropriate; i know he's openly gay but who cares
ellen = jayne wisener ( sweeney todd movie ), if radcliffe is chris. lea michelle, if groff is chris.
thuy = paolo montalban if he is a high tenor.
jon = keith robinson ( dreamgirls movie )

Haha, I'll have to rewatch that part. I remember that she wasn't that great of a singer (and certainly could not even compare to Lea) but I didn't think she was terrible.

I saw that one too, she's OK remember they asked her how long she was already in the USA and she said 1981. Think its the diction and she is having issues with reaching the high notes.
The other director seems to like her if not for the way she presented herself that day. As i recall 2 of them said "what a transformation"..and the other said her looks is a way bit too much ...referring to the lost of innocent look she carried on that audition.
In hawaii they really liked the other girl of Korean/Chinese/Turk heritage. She did have a lung of steel but as the director said her voice doesnt have the passion cause she's too young and if they try to bring it out of her at such a young age...it will be disastrous to her voice. Wonder what happened to her cause it showed in the film that they were really into her and even said they like to see her in 3 years time.

I think she ended up being in the show later. I heard that somewhere, anyway.
I know Asians tend to look young for their age, but if Kim doesn't look a certain age it makes it just too weird. We need to root for Chris/Kim at the beginning, not want to diagnose Chris with a paraphilia. Lea was only 19 and did look young, but she looked at least 17.
I think the Engineer will have to be played by an Asian or else the film will stir up huge controversy. I like the idea of B.D. Wong.
I don't like the idea of Daniel Radcliffe as Chris because I think he's a bad actor. Also, can he pull off an American accent believably? Same with Jayne Wisener, who I'm not also sure can belt, and her acting wasn't that great either.

"box office pull" it is excatly why my list is like that. Remember that the LEAD ROLE will be an unknown (still think it should go to a none Filipina)and those supporting roles are basically sone of the hottest stars under the age of 27.

Lea was 17 years old when she got discovered for the role. And she did not appear in Broadway until she was 19..the show was already running a year in Wetend before they took it to broadway.
If you look back at the audition of Lea (in YT) you cannot tell that she's 17, she looked more like 14-15 years old. Monique Wilson her understudy and friend actually looked more like a 18-19 years old and they also liked her but she's more like Vanessa hudgens without the glamour look.

I was actually wondering about Jake Gyllenhaal for Chris. He can supposedly sing, can't he?
If we're considering jazzy singers for Ellen, what about Zooey Deschanel?
Btw, didn't respond to this earlier so I will now: Sarah Geronimo has a great voice and is kind of how I picture Kim, so I think I may root for her now.
lea salonga was born in 1971, she auditoned in 1988 which makes her 17 but she looks 15 then. here's here audition video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eVtM0eVto4&feature=related

My bad, I guess I was thinking of when she played the role on Broadway.
I just think Charice looks too young. I'm uncomfortable thinking of her as a prostitute. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just how I feel. Of course, by the time they started filming, maybe she would look old enough.
here's charice's video where she also sings " over the rainbow". she performed and sang it much better than sarah, in my opinion.

Zooey would be great as Ellen!

Okay, I am warming up to Charice as Kim when I only watch the videos of her from 2008 or 2009. I think what's screwing me up is seeing all of those young pictures of her on Google Images.

Yah ok well Sarah is fine and if your looking for the Lea look she is probably one of the closest look there is she has a couple of problems though:
1. If you notice she sang in tht video and have problems now reaching the high notes that she was able to do when she was younger (she's 20 going 21 btw).
2. She's a contract artist for the biggest network in the Philippines. Same network tht charice calls "Home Studio" but Charice isnt signed to any of the studios in the Philippines other than Warner Brothers.
3. And if your going for a filipino again? (the Production of miss Saigon for 20 years have had a huge amount of Filipino Kims) I would certainly root for Charice at least she's not part of the Phil entertainment industry officialy and people already knows her in this country and beyond.
But like I said I would rather like to see other Asian Americans, Asian group have a shot at it cause its really starting to look like that Broadway, Hollywood, West End are favoring Fils than other Asians out there.

Yah i thought so too...here she is at her concert.
