Alvin and the Chipmunks isnt the first acting job she did.

Here she is in a full movie made for TV:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XOSvlrVha4

And here are the most recent commercial act she did:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz0vSAx4mVg

her acting chops might not be at par with Lea Salonga at the same age but she has the potential.

Lea Salonga was already a veteran of Plays and movies at the time of her audition for Miss Saigon in Manila.

Let's not forget that there was a world-wide search for Kim when Miss Saigon was first produced. Women of different asian ethnicities all had their chances to be Kim. Announcements were made all over Asia as well. It just so happened that with all the needs of the production (clear diction, "western style" singing, looks, etc) were satisfied by those they found in the Philippines.

Aside from Japan, the Philippines has the most advanced, western-style theater industry, so you are just more likely to find people there who have the training and background necessary to play the role. You'd also probably find the most talent there for the same reason that most American stage actors end up in New York.

I am not sure about Charice, from the clips I have heard she does have a good voice, but it didn't wow me. I am not sure about her acting either.

South Korea would be another good place to look for talent. I have seen some clips from South Korean productions of shows and I liked them overall. Whoever they choose to play Kim, I hope that take great care with casting the role, like when they chose Lea.

I would love for Kim to be played by an actual Vietnamese girl. I'd fully support doing a talent search throughout all of Asia if they decide to go with an unknown (either locally or globally). As long as Kim can sing, act, and remotely look the part, I'm fine with whomever they cast.

I remember in The Making of Miss Saigon they showed a Vietnamese woman auditioning for Kim, but they decided she looked too mature for the role.

My problem with Charice aside from unknown acting ability is she looks really, really young. Kim should be young but not so much that her relationship with Chris is creepy, IMO.

It is creepy, though. Kim is 17 when she meets Chris. Chris shouldn't be much older than 21 or 22 for it to work and not look creepy.

We don't really know how old Chris is, do we? So he could be pretty young.

I guess I mean how young people come across. Like, Charice doesn't even look 17.

Here is my Dream Cast for Miss Saigon.

* The Engineer - aka Tran Van Dinh, the sleazy but comical pimp owner of 'Dreamland'.

(Lou Diamond Philips, BD Wong, George Takei?)

* Kim - A teenage girl, recently orphaned and forced to work at 'Dreamland'. She corresponds to Butterfly.

(Don't Know at this point)

* Chris - aka "Christopher Scott" An American G.I. sergeant about to leave Saigon to return to America. He corresponds to Pinkerton.

( Daniel Radcliff, Robert Pattinson, David Archuleta)

* John - Chris' friend, also a G.I. He corresponds to Sharpless.

(Daniel Radcliff, Robert Pattinson, David Archuleta)

* Thuy - Kim's cousin, to whom Kim was promised by her parents when the two were thirteen. Has since become an officer in the Communist Vietnamese government.

(James Kyson Lee, Daniel Dae Kim)

* Ellen - Chris' American wife. She corresponds to Kate.

(Vanessa Hudgens, Jojo, Renee Olstead, Kristen Stewart, Emma Watson)

* Mama Sang - (Lea Salonga, Lisa Ling)

George Takei? He's past 70. I don't think the Engineer is supposed to be much older then 30s at the most.

Methinks Dshur is just jotting down random Asian actors s/he knows.

Whoever said Jackie Chan was probably kidding, but he's well-known as a singer in Asia.

Ok what's wrong with my dream list?

Takei has a question mark beside his name cause i also considered his age but he had stage experience too.

Lou Diamond Philips - La Bamba

BD Wong -- a couple of other people also named him in this thread, I went to incldue him for his looks which is an appropriate one for a an Asian "Engineer"

Radcliff - started on stage himself, before Harry Potter certainly that acounts for something.

Patterson - Its a love story now I dont know about his singing but this is a MOVIE and a damn good actor at that.

David Archuleta -- HE is a damn good singer and have acted recently as well on TV.

Vanessa Hudgens - She looks more like an American than an Asian, one of the Disney stars that actually can sing. (She was discovered for her singing ability in High School Musical and not for her looks)

Jojo - Damn good singer and have experience in Acting in TV shows since 7 years of age.

Renee Olstead - Jazz Singer and Actress

Melissa Stewart - Actress --- dont know anything else about her

Emma Watson - Started on stage as well maybe a little too young for Ellen at her age of 19 but i heard she sings too.

I dont have to explain both Lisa Ling and Lea everybody knows about those 2.

Its a Movie folks...you know Lea also is the singing voice in the King and I and not the actress who actually portrayed it on film.

So who would be a good one for the Kim's cousin? Those 2 Asian Americans I named are established actors in Lost and Heroes.

Shall we go back in time now and get a Jonathan Pryce or Ben Kingsley again to look Asiatic for Miss Saigon and The King and I respectively?

It's a MOVIE they need established actors that are believable.

They also need actors who are A) Good and B) Can sing decently. A lot of the people you listed have unknown or bad singing ability, and IMO some of them are horrible actors.

Dshar, that'd be fine if Hollywood dubbed nowadays. But it doesn't. I would love for them to dub in singing.

Dshar, it still doesn't make sense what you wrote before. Lea never dubbed anyone's voice for a KING & I movie. She just sang Tuptim's songs in that Julie Andrews/Ben Kingsley studio cast recording.

Sarah Geronimo should play Kim. Great actress, stunning voice! Forward the video to 1:50 because she gives a tagalog speech before starting the song.

Jed Madela should play Thuy. Won the World Championships for the performing arts, I don't know if he could act, but he loves Miss Saigon, and is friends with Lea Salonga. Here's Lea Salonga and Jed Madela singing "A Whole New World"

JoJo, Vanessa, KStew, and Emma are no where near talented enough to pull of the role of Ellen. Not too mention I don't think anyone would buy them as a married woman...
