"Not all stage versions of popular movies turn out to be smash hits — just ask the producers of “Carrie” or “Big.” But “Moulin Rouge!” has emerged as a feel-good hit of the season, attracting everyone from Ruth Bader Ginsburg to Nicole Kidman (who played the original Satine in the movie) to Lin-Manuel Miranda. The show has raked in more than $60 million since it entered previews in June, and it consistently ranks as the second-most-packed house in town after “Hamilton.”

Even at this rate, it will still be a minute before it recoups its huge capitalization and running costs.
I think they were smart to open when they did. Got the summer tourist audience and had most of the new-show hype to themselves. Seems to be paying off so far.

No one! Just not surprised it’s s hot, and the fact that the show couldn’t be amazing, but alas they won’t ever work on it because why not? It’s doing well.
Curious to see how it tours.

Just because you don't think ''Moulin Rouge!'' is ''amazing,'' doesn't mean that plenty of others DO find it ''amazing.'' You're welcome to judge it however you wish, but it's your opinion, not a ''fact.''

I was about to post a comment saying that, despite its high capitalization, the show’s running cost is probably about the same as the average large-scale musical. But then I remembered that they must be paying a fortune in song royalties.
IMPO, the unnecessary cramming-in of an excessive number of songs was already show’s artistic downfall, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being the show’s financial downfall too. Not that I’m predicting it will flop - it’s obviously on a good path to recoupment. I’m just saying that if sales do end up dropping, the royalties will likely be the biggest thing that comes back to haunt them.

That doesn't happen - even though it's the same producer - profit from Moulin Rouge doesn't go to King Kong investors. It stays with the Moulin Rouge investors.

Any money the producers lost with King Kong is irrelevant to the money Moulin Rouge is making until Moulin Rouge recoups.

I know. Too many fun pop songs. How awful. They should have cut out some of the hits and sprinkled in some forgettable original tunes. This is Broadway, after all.

This board continues to crack me up. No where did I state my opinion as fact. It’s simply my opinion because it’s my opinion. I feel like I shouldn’t have to explain that...
I would love some clarification about the songs only because I know there’s some rule where you can play like a small snippet (8bars?) and not have to pay, which would cover a lot of the songs. BUT THIS IS JUST MY OPINON!!!!

That'd be a helluva trick for a theater that doesn't even have a balcony. Maybe that's why the seats are so expensive. They probably have to build it to order.

You might be thinking of a rule where having 8 (or some other number) NOTES (not bars) identical to another song constitutes plagiarism. I don’t know if this is a real rule, but I’ve heard of it before, and it sounds like that might be what you’re thinking of.
But in any case, it’s irrelevent because even the “small snippet” songs are listed under the song credits in the program, so clearly they aren’t trying to pass it off as fair use or some other loophole.

Other than the producers and their lawyers, who knows what royalty agreements they have with pre-existing songs? It could be a little - it could be a lot. I just checked and it took Rock of Ages between three and four years to recoup. (Opened April 2009, recouped sometime in 2012 per Playbill)
