Moulin Rouge brings in $60 million so far

"Not all stage versions of popular movies turn out to be smash hits — just ask the producers of “Carrie” or “Big.” But “Moulin Rouge!” has emerged as a feel-good hit of the season, attracting everyone from Ruth Bader Ginsburg to Nicole Kidman (who played the original Satine in the movie) to Lin-Manuel Miranda. The show has raked in more than $60 million since it entered previews in June, and it consistently ranks as the second-most-packed house in town after “Hamilton.”

Even at this rate, it will still be a minute before it recoups its huge capitalization and running costs.

I think they were smart to open when they did. Got the summer tourist audience and had most of the new-show hype to themselves. Seems to be paying off so far.

Actually not surprised. If this headline was about any other show, the adulation would be pouring out.

I'm sure he's implying they share MANY similar producers. (I seldom pay attention who is footing the bill, so I can't be certain.)

I know. Too many fun pop songs. How awful. They should have cut out some of the hits and sprinkled in some forgettable original tunes. This is Broadway, after all.

Sorry but there's no such rule as the "small snippet" exemption.

Other than the producers and their lawyers, who knows what royalty agreements they have with pre-existing songs? It could be a little - it could be a lot. I just checked and it took Rock of Ages between three and four years to recoup. (Opened April 2009, recouped sometime in 2012 per Playbill)

That'd be a helluva trick for a theater that doesn't even have a balcony. Maybe that's why the seats are so expensive. They probably have to build it to order.
