The musical was first confirmed to be in the works in May of 2020, with Tony winner Bob Martin (“The Prom&rdquo and Tony-nominated Rick Elice (“Peter and the Starcatcher&rdquo writing the book. Greenblatt is aiming for a Broadway opening in 2024, with the show being titled either “Smash, A New Musical” or “Smash: The Musical.”
The musical will follow writers Julia and Tom (played on TV by Debra Messing and Christian Borle) as they create “Bombshell,” but the storyline will differ.
While “Smash” the series featured both original music and a melange of covers (who can forget McPhee’s Bar Mitzvah performance of “Shake it Out&rdquo, Greenblatt confirmed to Variety that the musical will feature only the show’s original music, “probably” with a new song or two in the mix. He also confirmed that fan-favorite “They Just Keep Moving the Line” will be in the musical, along with the previously-reported classic, “Let Me Be Your Star.”
“It’s most of the songs that Shaiman and Wittman wrote for the television show,” Greenblatt said. “They’re all being used in different places and sung by different characters in this new version, but it’s that score from the TV show.”
So help me if television / streaming series become the most popular source material for Broadway musicals in the future. I can’t imagine Squid Game: The Musical…

I don't think there is cause for concern, SMASH has a score written by a legendary Broadway team performed by legendary Broadway performers about creating a Broadway musical. It seems ripe for an adaptation. I am happy that they are trying to make this happen. It's not a random TV series where you might scratch your head thinking why?
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

This isn’t a brand new announcement. It was first mentioned in 2020 - going on 2 years. And zero happened then. All your points are valid, but let’s see where this one goes. Countless projects with amazing teams fizzle before anything truly gets going.

I'm concerned because they never managed to make Tom and Julia interesting but maybe there'll be major changes and we'll end up with a backstage musical like Kiss Me, Kate. Will Ellis be in this version?
I'd be concerned that the producer doesn't seem to know the difference between a reading, where the cast reads the script and sings the score for the creatives, which is what they allege is happening this summer, and a staged reading, workshop, or lab. It's easy to say there'll be a reading because no one's invited to that.
Greenblatt added that the workshop’s cast will likely consist of “actors who are friends of ours, that will please us. It really isn’t supposed to be the cast for the show just yet. So we are only a few steps away from that stage.” He declined to list all the choices he has for a dream live production casting. As previously reported, the team also includes Steven Spielberg and Neil Meron (“Annie Live!&rdquo, who both served as executive producers on the series. Greenblatt was the chairman of NBC entertainment at the time, championing “Smash” as his own passion project. Tony- and Grammy-winning duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who wrote most of the music for the series, will also be working on the musical, along with choreographer Joshua Bergasse. Meron, Greenblatt, Shaiman and Wittman are also collaborating on the Broadway adaptation of the 1959 film “Some Like it Hot,” which premieres later this year.
I can’t believe it’s nearly 10 years since Smash debuted (which is obviously why this article came out now!) - I’d definitely be up for a Smash musica focusing on the the Bombshell songs, and it seems like they’re further into the process than I thought they’d be, but part of me still wonders if this will ever happen lol!
I’d love for Megan and Kat to be involved (wouldn’t be right if they weren’t blasting out Let Me Be Your Star on stage!) but it sounds like they’re going for a new storyline whilst still having Tom and Julia writing the musical, so who knows!
In 2022, when every show is getting rebooted (wether the GP wants it or not&hellip, just reboot the TV show for f*ck’s sake. The idea that this will be a good stage show is silly, especially if they’re not getting the same cast. Camp it up and bring everyone back for a season or two.
They should do a musical about the making of SMASH the TV show.
Numbers could include "No One Likes Rebeck" and "Kat McPhee Will Be America's Sweetheart (No, Really. She Will Be)" and "We'll Use That Stock Plunkety-Plunk Music Any Time Something 'Amusing' Happens".
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

And don't forget the power romance ballad "I Can't, I'm in Tech".
I wonder if Rebeck will get some sort of royalty if this show goes the distance.
Since Smash on tv was initially intended to be a launching pad for a real Marilyn Monroe musical on Broadway, I would assume her agent and the network/producers made a deal for the stage rights.
