Nice article about Joe Mantello and a Q and A where he reveals these two gems—
NYT—Whenever you get a new play to read, your first thought is always, “Is there a part for Laurie Metcalf?”
JM—Confirm, even when — and especially when — it’s an all-male cast. She can do anything.
NYT—Stephen Sondheim will deliver a completed musical that you’re directing by the end of the summer.
JM—Hopefully confirm.

You missed:
Nobody should make “Wicked” into a movie while it’s still selling out on Broadway and in road shows.
Confirm.

Wait-- isn't the Sondhiem-musical-at-the-end-of-summer news actually HUGE NEWS? Is this the Bunuel project? Or another revival like ASSASSINS was? Shouldn't all of us know-nothings on this board be working overtime to come up with rumors and guesses to fill the void?

Posted: 5/30/18 at 8:36pmThat indeed is huge news. Following last year’s workshop of “The Bunuel Project”, there has been scant information available. In the thread on the topic, someone mentioned that a musical that was thinking of transferring to The Public next season got bumped for Bunuel, so this indeed could be THE SHOW to see. When does The Public normally announce its season? I was beginning to wonder why is hasn’t been announced yet and perhaps they’re waiting to confirm this show - which will most likely drive up the season members!

Sondheim himself has says he's a slow/lazy writer who works better under deadlines. Part of me just wants them to announce it so then he has to finish it by next spring.

His quote about 45 not getting a callback is absolute gold.

Interesting that profiles of Mantello never mention his, ahem, participation in "Fun Home," which probably financed one of those three gorgeous homes mentioned in this piece.

Mantello directed the first workshop of Fun Home in 2010 at The Public.

I'm pretty sure that a great portion of what Mantello owns has been financed by what he's made from Wicked, which in 2012 totaled over 23 million.

It's just that KnewItWhenIWasInFron's use of "ahem" made it seem like there was tea to spill here...
Anyway, I'm too lazy to do a Google search right now- why did Mantello not direct the Broadway production of FUN HOME? Did Sam Gold have more "in-the-round" clout?

Mantello was initially attached when the project was announced in 2009, but Sam Gold took over in 2011 or 2012.
I think the insinuation here is that Mantello did uncredited work on the production once Gold took over.

No, it's that Mantello maintained a piece of the show after being supplanted by Gold.
