One thing my friends in London noticed is it tends to be American tourists who pay the crazy premium orchestra prices in London. I'm guessing New Yorkers simply have higher budgets to spend for theater and are used to the $499 type center orchestra prices to see a show whether it be in NYC or London.

He focuses on the relative ticket prices and the fact that in the United States there are enough people willing to pay the higher prices for certain shows. But he doesn’t really address the other side of the equation — increased costs — other than to note that Cameron MacIntosh doesn’t want to produce in New York any more given the higher costs and that in the UK actor salaries are lower in part because they have free health care. There have been complaints for decades that unions are at fault but that can not be the reason or sole reason costs in N.Y. have apparently exploded over the past 5 years.

I read through the entire article and it never answered the question it was teasing throughout in any substantial way. Maybe its main purpose is a prompt for user comments.

I never actually thought about general healthcare costs for the performers (aside from work related injuries) being a factor in the pricing of London shows.
I will say there is a lot of credence to the argument that Americans are willing to spend more on tickets since it’s usually an “event” for us and not a part of everyday culture like in the UK. Even then, I can’t imagine spending what some of these people have spent on Broadway tickets. I just purchased my most expensive ticket ever - a runway seat for CATS for May - at $275, besting the $199 I spent for Othello last year (which was a bad investment). Before that, my record was $177 for the OBC of Hamilton (though 4 were out that day).
Spending over $1000 for a Broadway ticket - singular - just blows my mind though, especially when I think about how I managed to book 13 West End shows for $675 in total just two years ago.

It’s odd because London is not an inexpensive city. But theatre tickets are quite affordable. The overall experience is much nicer too. West End is much less trashy and tacky vs Times Square.

This is a garbage article. How can you talk about this subject and not even mention IA & AFM salaries.
The only thing of note here, is that Mackintosh is apparently done with Broadway?

Side note - I find it interesting that Mackintosh's Broadway credits are mostly revivals and rehashes. His last truly original musical was Miss Saigon in 1991.

Like Tag said, at the end of the day this is not a hard question and one the article doesn't even answer. Actors in London aren't paid much. Most actors on the West End have 2 or 3 jobs and wait tables on the side. Unless you are a star over there you can't make a living doing theatre.
