ON YOUR FEET Cast Recording

So, the cast recording for ON YOUR FEET came out today and I must say...I'm not impressed at all.

As someone who wasn't a huge fan of the show, I figured that the Estefan's fantastic music being preserved as a cast recording would prove to be redemptive, but I'm finding based on a few of the songs that I've heard that they kept a lot of the inane dialogue peppered through the big numbers (especially "Conga" and that the live aspect of the recording makes a lot of the actors either drowned out by the band or the audience, making it a very uneasy listen in terms of a cast recording. The only song that seems to fare well is "Coming Out Of The Dark".

I like when cast albums include lots of dialogue and with this being recorded live I bet it would have probably been difficult to cut some of that dialogue out without it being an obvious edit. I'm enjoying the novelty of a live Broadway cast recording but I will agree that the sound quality is lacking in places. The recent Miss Saigon revival cast album is an example of how to make a live recording sound near studio quality. However they did that everyone should be striving for that quality with live albums. The recent Kinky Boots London album was a mess and I think On Your Feet fairs a bit better in the way they edited it and the quality of the sound but it's not on the same level as Miss Saigon's live album quality.

I loved it! I actually enjoyed it much more with the dialogue than I would have without it. It actually played like a Broadway Cast Album as opposed to just a bunch of famous songs re-recorded (i.e. BEAUTIFUL).

I will admit... I'm jamming to the Mega Mix right now. Especially as many of the songs are presented in a performance context, having an audience reaction is nice. The people cheering along during the Mega Mix are a nice touch.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I could not agree more.

I downloaded it today. I liked it a lot, but I do agree with others the sound quality particularly during some of the dialogue left a lot to be desired. Nonetheless, I did enjoy listening to it. Thinking of going back and seeing it again.

I'm sure it'll go on tour. Can't wait for it to come to L.A. I love the Megamix!

There are some sound quality issues with the dialogue, for sure, but I like that about it. It highlights the live element of the album and it makes it stand out from most cast albums, which are recorded in a studio. But really, who can think about the dialogue with Villafañe's impressive vocal performance? I hadn't heard her sing the role or seen any clips and was shocked by how she manages to sound exactly like Gloria Estefan in a way that doesn't feel forced or gimmicky. What a terrific performance. As with most jukebox musicals, I wish some of the songs played longer and with less disruptions, and the dialogue (particularly Emilio Estefan's) is corny and silly, but Villafañe makes one forget about all this--and any time Andrea Burns is in an album/show is a reason to rejoice.

I couldn't even make it through one full listening of the album. I shut it off halfway through. Why oh why didn't they record it in a studio?

I attempted to listen to this recording last night. it was painful. why they recorded it live is beyond me.

"I hope they recall this recording and redo it correctly. I've spoken to a few cast members who also hate how badly produced this recording turned out. "



I doubt they'll recall it, but wow I didn't know the cast also realized it turned out badly.

Presumably the cast listened to it during and post production? Unbelievable that producers would permit such a poor recording to be released considering the show deals with the recording industry.
