It's not part of this season. Why bother imagining how it would have done had it opened this season instead?

This kind of what-if complaining is always confusing to me. If you think your show needed to open in a "weaker" season to have a shot at winning, then maybe it was never the best in the first place.

Exactly. It makes as much sense as imagining if the show you loved opened in a season even stronger than the season in which it premiered.

Mean Girls is not the first nor the last musical to receive a Best Musical nomination despite mixed to negative reviews.

I'm not sure how often it has happened before, butRaúl Esparza was nominated in 2007, 2008, and 2009."
Thanks! I figured there was someone and was a little too lazy to do the research lol.

I liked Come From Away very much, probably even more than Hansen.
But I can understand why Hansen won and I could accept it beating Great Comet..
However if Come From Away had've beaten Great Comet I think I would've actually started beating random strangers in the street.

You're right that it is a very captain obvious post, but there were so many posts in this thread asking about Mean Girls getting a nomination despite its reviews.
What I don't get is why they had SIX actresses and FOUR actors? Why were Jelani and the Margarita actor shut out?

She was also nominated in 5 of the last 10 years (2008, 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2018). That's pretty damn impressive!
Judith Light was nominated for Featured Actress - Play in 2011, 2012, and 2013, winning in the latter two.

Agreed. And what should they have nominated instead of Mean Girls or Frozen? Summer? Margaritaville? Personally, I’m avoiding all four shows like the plague, but I will see Soongebob in June. I never thought I’d say that.
I’ve got to believe The Bands Visit will do very well, always like to see a season full of very worthy nominees for a show like The Bands Visit to win against - but a win is a win. Great producing on that one.

They had six actresses because there was a tie between the 5th & 6th choices. (Or within a certain small number of votes different if not a direct tie - I can't remember the number of votes it has to be to force a 6th nominee.) But it's standard voting procedure and rules, not an arbitrary decision.
Jelani was considered in Featured, not Leading.
And there were only five total men eligible for Leading Actor, so it's not surprising that they didn't feel the need to recognize all five when they only needed to nominate four. I'm not sure most people were expecting to see Nolan's name today.
^Ahhhhhhhhh. Good for the two ladies tied!
I feel so bad for Caissie Levy. If Disney send her as Best Featured Actress for Elsa, she would had gotten in and possibly been a lock for the Tony.

I love Diana Rigg as much as the next gay, but did she really do anything award worthy in My Fair Lady? Maybe she bumped it up a notch since I saw it in mid previews.

I'm soooo thrilled for this love that Mean Girls received, it was predictable, but still amazing! I believe Fey is winning Best Book, right?
I have to say I wasn't expecting so much nominations for CAROUSEL (5 acting noms! but not directing LOL) and so little for FROZEN. I mean, no tech awards? Wow, they really hated it LOL
I'm really sad for the featured performances of ONCE ON THIS ISLAND. No Newell, no Salonga, Miller. Sad.
Especially because two featured actors from CAROUSEL apparently are not really worth of the nom.
Diana Rigg for a non-singing role? When was the last time an actor got a nom for this?
SpongeBob REALLY went there, right? I believe they can win Featured Actor now, and the awards for Scenic Design and Choreography are certainly possible.
On the PLAY SIDE of the things:
- Schumer in but the Play itself not LOL
- How Angels only got 1 actor? I thought McArdle was a lock, but Michael Cera is now a Tony Nominee for acting wtf
- THRILLED for the amount of noms for Angels. I hope they win 5-6 awards!

Also, with this amount of LOVE for the Carousel cast. I believe Henry and Mendez are in a pretty amazing position, right?

I don't know, I think snobby elitists shooting down opinions as "childish" just because they don't agree with them and aren't intelligent enough to express an actual rebuttal to those opinions are even sadder!
All in all, I'm satisfied with the nominations. Some strange ones here and there, but overall, it should be a fun ceremony. (My S.O. is really pulling for Special Tony-winner Springsteen to perform.)
I'm thrilled Ar'iel Stachel got his nod for The Band's Visit. He was so charming and interesting in that role. Laurie Metcalf is literally having the best year of her life. And it's very strange to me that Frozen got no technical or acting nominations, but just the Big 3. Has that happened before?
Also, I noticed that three categories feature nominees competing against themselves...hah!

I was thinking about Metcalf's year.
Has any person ever got nominated for three out of the four main awards at the same year?
Or any actor, actually.
She will likely be an Emmy nominee for ROSEANNE. Incredible!
Got so excited about noms, I went ahead and ordered my ticket for Iceman. Was afraid the third row Center Orchestra aisle seat I have had my eye on would get grabbed up after show got several noms.

Off the top of my head, Bob Fosse won the Tony (for directing and choreographing Pippin), Emmy (for directing Liza with a Z), and the Best Director Oscar all in 1973. As for nominations, I don't have a full list of people but I know for sure Glenn Close is one of them (Oscar, Emmy, and Tony (win) in 1984).
Very pleasantly surprised to see a nomination for Michael Cera. Loved him in Lobby Hero!
