Not ignorant at all. It's hard to describe. There's a lot of very motion/dance based transitions, act openers, etc. It's not traditional "dance" but if you've seen Steven Hoggett's work on plays like Black Watch or (to a lesser extent) The Glass Menagerie, you might have a sense of how it works. It's quite stunning and would be a thoroughly untraditional winner which would make it quite exciting in my book. To me, the only show that rivals it is Once On this Island.
Is it anything like A Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time (which is another play nominated for choreo)? I really loved the highly stylized, choreographed movements of Christopher, very intense and kept the energy moving.

Curious Incident is a good comp! And I now see that was also done (with collaborators that time) by Hoggett. So just imagine a lot more of that, and you're probably close to the right idea. :)

His performance in that is really exceptional, he's the true leadof the show, and Ireally don't know how they'llfind another actor to perform it as perfectly. I think he deserves it."
Completely agree. I'm concerned the mere fact that it's a "SpongeBob musical" will cause voters to not take him seriously. Maybe I'm being too cynical though. The category really seems to be a toss up at this point. Reviews will clear it up.
That said, I've only seen three of the five contenders: Slater, Hadden-Paton and Shalhoub. But Slater is truly incredible. Ethan Slater and Katrina Lenk are the two performers I've seen this season that really blew me away. I couldn't imagine anyone else in those roles.
Having seen all of the lead actor contenders, I can't imagine anybody other than Harry Hadden-Paton winning this year. Yes, Slater is a force of nature and Shalhoub is heartbreaking, but Hadden-Paton adds so much depth to a character that is so easy to write off as an unequivocal d-bag.
Hadden-Paton also gave the only lead actor performance I actively thought about in the days since seeing his show. I left SpongeBob thinking Slater was great, but then moved on pretty quickly. And after The Band's Visit, Lenk's performance is what stayed with me more than anything else.

If that happens, that would be really odd...I know Caissie seemingly has less stage time/dialogue as Jelani but she also one half of the duo the plot revolves around. If Caissie is gonna be considered featured, so should Jelani if he's going to be up for a nom. I do agree it's an odd situation that those roe are in. Patti, if nominated, should be in lead category for sure.
I have not much else to say that no one else hasn't but I will say in terms of acting for the plays, that feels tight...it could go to anyone.
I really feel like Best Featured Actress in a musical is a crowded, but weak category. There's a lot of actresses giving nice supporting performances, but none that stand out to me as Tony Award worthy.
I would like to give a shout out to Kristen Sieh who I think gives a beautiful performance as Iris in The Band's Visit. Her role isn't very big and she doesn't really ever sing, but her performance is still lovely and worthy of a nomination over many of the actresses being pushed. Also, count me in as somebody who really hopes that Kenita gets a nomination for Once on this Island.
While on the topic of Once on this Island, after seeing My Fair Lady, I think Once on this Island should totally win Best Revival. It's a gorgeous production with a ton of energy that really elevates the material. I didn't used to Love OOTI, but now I'm a fan.
I'm only counting 5 eligible Best Actor nominees (Paul Alexander Nolan + the 4 frequently mentioned here -- Harry H-P, Joshua H, Tony S, and Ethan S). Unless there's a surprise ruling about someone, I would think it's a 4-man category (Harry, Joshua, Tony, and Ethan) since there have to be 7 eligible nominees for the standard 5-person category.
Besides, Gough is just stunning in the role. In a production filled with highlights, she really soars. The best delivery of the Night Flight to San Francisco speech I've ever seen, by far. I really, really hope she wins the Tony. I hope they stack it properly so that Lane and Garfield can each win as well, they were both fabulous and deserve the recognition.
I think people got a bit carried away declaring Garfield the Best Actor winner. If Garfield, as a Brit, can't beat Bryan Cranston at the UK's Tony's, then he can easily be beat at the American Tony's.
Good news for Denzel Washington though. Most people seem impressed by his performance in The Iceman Cometh previews, and and if he and the production get strong ink, I can see him winning.
So locks for Best Musical: The Band's Visit, Spongebob, and... Might as well throw darts at a board and pick the other two.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
Well, Angels was not popular the first time around at the Oliviers and this time lost three almost sure thing awards, so maybe its not a good comparison.
And honestly, I don't think Washington is the main competition here.

People were impressed with his performance in RAISIN IN THE SUN, too (after much pre-previews skepticism about his age), and then he didn't even get nominated. But maybe there will be regret for overlooking him in 2014?
Having seen both Iceman and Angels, I don't think Denzel can really compete with the Angels cast. I enjoyed his performance, but it didn't feel unique either to Hickey or Denzel, truth be told. Garfield, though, is just goddamn electric and uses every tool in his arsenal to perfect the role of Prior. I would truly be shocked if Garfield lost at all, but even more so if he lost to Denzel.
I'm confused about Angels's Olivier performance too, really, but it is a pretty American play. Given that and the timing of its revival, I think it's altogether more poignant to American crowds at this moment in time, further bolstering Garfield's chances.
In my heart of hearts, I want for Lane, Garfield, Gough, and Brown to sweep the categories but I'm not gonna hold my breath on that one.

I feel bad for Andy Karl. If only ''Groundhog Day'' had opened THIS season, he'd probably be a slam-dunk to win for Best Actor in a Musical. Winning is about more than talent; it's timing, too.
^you can say that again. In another year (last year, the year prior, the year before that), The Band’s Visit would have a STEEP uphill climb to best musical. But in this arid season, it will coast (deservingly) to a win. And same for Katrina Lenk who, realistically, is absolutely brilliant but in no way would have been given the best actress trophy over the actual winners in the last few years.
Now that Mean Girls reviews are out, what are we all thinking about their noms?
I think they'll get a Best Musical nom and Best Book nom. Best Director and Best Choreography aren't out of the question, either (though Choreography is more likely). I think Best Score isn't going to happen, since it seems to be the show's weakest element.
Design could be Lighting (though it's annoying that there's no Best Projections award because they could possibly win for that) and Costume, but I'm not sure if they'd get a nomination for Best Set, considering it's sparse.
I believe Featured noms could be Weed and Henson (in their respective categories). If Louderman is considered Leading, I really think she could get a nomination, especially because she won't be splitting the vote with Henningsen, it seems.
Elegance, I think Kate Rockwell has a better chance of a Featured Actress nomination than Weed. I know many who've noted Rockwell as the standout performance.
That was originally my thought as well, but critics seem to lump Ashley Park and Kate Rockwell together in all of their reviews (at least that was my impression). So while Kate Rockwell made more of an impression on me than Ashley Park, I think they could possibly split votes between them and leave it open for Weed to take it. Just my thoughts though and not totally going off of my opinion, more going off of reviews.
