Sorry all, but I just got the London recording of Once on this Island, and I just have to say that it's attrocious. PLEASE don't buy it. The musical direction is horrible, the new vocal arrangements are horrible, the orchestrations are horrible, the production is horrible, and even the singers are sometimes horrible. One thing that was so great about the show were the dynamics between the songs and in this recording everyone is just belting their brains out all the time. All Asaka does is riff around the melody. Erzulie is old and tired. Daniel and Ti Moune are ALWAYS flat. Tonton sounds like an old teacher of mine (not good). That recording has sucked the life out of that show, but thank God for the original cast. So warning to anyone even thinking about purchasing it, please don't. It's not even worth burning. There's my rant. Sorry if I wasted a minute of your time.
The only good song on that recording is "Mama Will Provide", but I have to say, I wish they would have put TiMoune's extra verse in it, the way it was in the show.
I have always meant to check out the London recording for myself, but I couldn't imagine it coming anywhere near the Broadway recording. London cast recordings of American shows have always bothered me to some extent. Although Chita gives a better performance (making it worth the purchase), the teenagers in the London Bye Bye Birdie have the WORST American accents (with some teens, hardly trying to sound American). Also, the Maine accents in the London Carousel are hard to handle as well )although, Joanna Riding gives a beautiful reading of Julie).
Oh yeah, and the accents are attrocious.
