Posted: 9/11/08 at 11:49pmDo you think that the producers of SA will try anything to keep it open or is it closing anytime?

Posted: 9/11/08 at 11:51pmI'm surprised how poorly it is doing for a Best Musical winner.

Posted: 9/12/08 at 12:00amHave you looked at this week's grosses, ljay? Everything is doing poorly. The kids went back to school. The stupid thing on the part of the producers was who they chose for their 1st attempt at stunt casting. Hunter Parrish is a supporting actor on a high-end cable channel show that's watched by the PARENTS of SA's target audience. I've said all along, they started an interesting relationship with Degrassi and The-N last year, they should have kept that up by casting someone from one of those shows.

Posted: 9/12/08 at 12:18amI wouldn't really call Hunter Parrish stunt casting. He's not particularly famous and is actually quite appropriate for the part. And supposedly he can actually sing (I personally haven't heard him though). It's not like they had Dakota Fanning come in to play Wendla.

Posted: 9/12/08 at 12:23amI don't know Jenna Ushkowitz but am fb friends with her because I had a strange obsession with the Broadway Kids as a child... and her status implies she was just moved up to replace someone in the show... does anyone know anything about that?

Posted: 9/12/08 at 12:25amA Tony can only do so much when your show upsets alot of conservative parents who are brought to the show under the impression that the show is a family friendly show.

Where would they get that impression?
I'm not being sarcastic; I don't know. I didn't really pay attention to the show or its PR until the tour came here to SF.
If it's really being marketed that way, they're going to have to take a hard look at that and rebrand...

Posted: 9/12/08 at 12:30amTrekkie, its attendance was mostly in the 70's this past summer. That's not good for a musical that just won the Tony last year.

Posted: 9/12/08 at 12:31amThe kids are back at school now, but Spring Awakening's grosses only broke 80% one week all summer.

Ummm... what gave them that impression? The fact that there's two kids having sex plastered all over any ad you ever see for the show?

Im fiends with some people who work at that show. They have some parents who are told by there kids that the show does not have that much sexual content or explicit lyrics. Im sure those parents go and then talk to other parents.

Posted: 9/12/08 at 12:49amThat is a small part of it for sure. A show needs alot of positive word of mouth to thrive.

Posted: 9/12/08 at 1:23amSpring Awakening has done wonderful business and now its star is fading. Thats OKAY people! Its made money and made careers and if it closes soon thats not a let down. Not every show that wins the Tony needs to be a mega hit that runs for years and years! As a matter fact I think that hurts the theatre. Some shows recieve great acclaim & run two or three years on Bway and then go on to long lives outside of NYC. Spring Awakening has done better than anyone though it would. I think it will have a long life. It just wasnt meant to be decade + mega hit. There is nothing wrong with that. I believe In the Heights will follow suit. I think two more years max for that show. And so what if thats true. Thats a healthy respectable run.

Posted: 9/12/08 at 1:30amCalling Hunter Parish stunt casting seems a bit far fetched. Bring in Zac Efron and then I'll agree.
#16re: One last attempt to keep SA open?
Posted: 9/12/08 at 4:26amStupid thread! I'm now picturing Zac Effron and Dakota Fanning in the lead roles. Thanks! What's next - one of the jonas brothers (not worth capitalizing) as Moritz?

Posted: 9/12/08 at 5:24amTo the OP, be very careful how you title your threads. The title of this threads gives the impression that "Spring Awakening" is indeed closing and that the producers are trying one last attempt in an effort to keep it open, which is clearly not the case.

Posted: 9/12/08 at 6:51amI do NOT think Mayer and/or Sater & Sheik would allow for Efron or one of the Jonas Brothers to be in the show. Not unless they were actually good in the roles they were going to be in...which is very improbable.

Posted: 9/12/08 at 10:00amI've said this before, but really, since the opening, they've done a terrible job of marketing the show. It was all over the place when it opened, and I suppose after it won the Tony, but I haven't seen or heard much about it away from Broadway web sites since then. With the buzz it had especially after winning the Tony, and the kind of audience it is capable of drawing, it should not be struggling like this, or at least, as it had over the summer.

I don't think people understand how Hunter Parrish was cast.
He went to an audition like everyone else. He was the best. Yes, he is more famous than others, but he earned the part because the casting directors thought he was the best choice.
I heard this from someone who was at the call and was called back numerous times for the tour's Otto role and saw Hunter there every time. The only comment he had about Hunter was "If he doesn't get cast, I have lost faith. He was incredible."
The producers may be choosing to use Hunter's fame to get some audience members, but if they were really into stunt casting, I'm sure Hunter is not their greatest attempt. Stunt Casting will probably roll around soon, though.
