My fiancee and I are visiting April 17th to the 20th for a short trip. I currently have these shows locked in.
Thursday, April 17 - Gypsy
Friday the 18th - Hugh Jackman at Radio City Music Hall
Saturday the 19th (Evening) - Old Friends
I would like some advice and suggestions on what I can fill the Saturday afternoon slot with. I have a few shows that I am interested in, so if anyone has seen or has had thoughts on these shows, it would be appreciated. I also feel I should say that I'm not a fan of Stranger Things, so The First Shadow is out of the running. And yes, I have also seen Oh, Mary!.
Maybe Happy Ending - This show had not been on my radar, but the more I look into it, the more intrigued I am. The only issue is I'm not sure if it will still be playing by the time I'm there. It's definitely one I am leaning to, based solely on word of mouth alone.
Boop! - Another show I initially had little interest in, but it has grown the more I looked into and heard about it. This is pretty low on the list, honestly, however. I'm a fan of classic animation so it could be fun, but I'm kind of burned out on the whole "fictional character enters the real world" plot. Still, from what I've seen and heard of the Chicago preview a couple years ago, it at least has my attention.
Dead Outlaw - This is a show that's kind of come out of nowhere, but I'm very intrigued. I've enjoyed most of the shows David Yazbek has worked on, and the premise and show itself sounds like a lot of fun. It sounds like the kind of wild show and unique experience that would make for a great afternoon.
The Picture of Dorian Gray - I admit, the main reason I want to see it is I think it will be one of the most stunning performances to hit Broadway in years, and seeing it be done by Sarah Snook is very tempting. To those who have seen this on the West End, I would love to hear your opinion on the show itself.
Good Night and Good Luck - Again, I mainly am interested in the performance. It's been a long time since I've seen the movie, but I remember greatly enjoying it. It also might be good to have a more dramatic show in the line up, since I'm mostly watching big, splashy shows the rest of the trip.
I would appreciate any thoughts, comments or suggestions on this upcoming trip, and feel free to add any recommendations as well. Thank you in advance.
That's a pretty varied list. Something like Maybe Happy Ending and Dead Outlaw you should be able to rush or buy closer to, while something like Good Night and Good Luck will likely need to be bought ahead.
What's something you really prioritize in theater?
I found The Picture of Dorian Gray stunning and Snook gives a tour de force performance. The staging has several amazing visual moments and the pacing never lags. The story is what it is, but I doubt it will ever be told again as interesting as it is here.
I’d go with Dead Outlaw. I rated it (Off Broadway) as one of my top three shows for 2024. It’s unlike anything that I had seen before. Excellent story, diverse music that I definitely want to hear again and strong performances. I left uplifted.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

When MAYBE HAPPY ENDING deservedly wins the Best Musical Tony next June, you'll kick yourself for having missed it in April. Hands down the one to see.
LOL, we will be at the same performances of Gypsy and Old Friends. On my trip, I will be seeing all the other things you mention except Dorian Gray, plus a few others. Of the ones you noted, I'm most looking forward to Dead Outlaw, because I like an offbeat musical and have enjoyed Yazbek's music in everything he's done except Tootsie.
Just remembering you've had an "and"
When you're back to "or"
Makes the "or" mean more than it did before
" Not on your list but perhaps should be - Death Becomes Her :) "
Saw it in Chicago last summer. (I live in Wisconsin.) Right now, the ones I'm leaning the most to are Maybe Happy Ending, Dorian Gray and Dead Outlaw. I appreciate the comments so far, and hope I can hear more.
And to answer SingingEachtoEach, I understand that my list is quite varied. I try to see a mix of shows when I can. The ones I have tickets to already were the ones I prioritized. Just having a hard time narrowing down this last slot, because I kind of want to see the three I mentioned above equally. I honestly miss the days when I had the time and budget to stay longer in NY and see 7 to 8 shows within 5 days. This wouldn't have been a problem then. :)

I feel that, a lot harder to see shows since I had a kid, certainly can't do the long trips up anymore. I get the FOMO but the good news is I think all 3 of those choices are awesome and you can't really make a wrong choice with those. I personally loved Maybe Happy Ending, Dead Outlaw looks really different and fun, and Sarah Snook got raves in London.
Well, for those of you who were curious, I did decide on my final show slot, and it is Maybe Happy Ending. It was an extremely hard decision, and I honestly miss the days when I had the time and money to see 7 or 8 shows during my Broadway theater trips. In the end, MHE won out due to what I heard from the score, and the video clips I saw.
I'm sure I am missing out on some great shows, and hopefully some will tour around Chicago and Madison, WI. close to where I live.
Thanks to those of you who replied, and I am excited to visit my favorite city for some wonderful shows, food and friends once more.
Hope you and your fiancée have a wonderful time! Just wanted to also let you know that if you’re getting in early on 4/17 you could squeeze in the 2 pm Thursday matinee of Boop which was on your list. I wasn’t dying to see it but based on the video and photos it looks like it may be fun so I got my tickets since they offered a good promo discount - BWYPUDGY.

Saw MHE a couple of weeks ago on a whirlwind trip similar to yours. You will love it.
