Was just told through a reliable source that Other Desert Cities will close June 17 , regardless of any Tony wins.
Telecharge also has sales till June 17th as well.

the 6/17 closing was announced weeks ago. All of the NY Times ads from the last few weeks all say "must close 6/17" Apparently the cast was asked to do a 3rd extension but all need to leave to do other projects. LCT was going to re-cast the show and run it through the summer but decided to close it instead.
That was a really stupid move. They could have done a complete star recasting and kept it open for at least another 6 months.

Very sorry to hear that. One of the most satisfying evenings I've had in a long time.
It is really stupid. Now, I am 100% on board for Peter winning best play. I was rooting for this, but if they aren't to use the win to help their box office then I hope Peter gets it to get the box office boost.

That's surprising. I mean, what if it wins and then closes a week later?

I'm wondering if the've kept the closing quiet so it wouldn't hurt their Tony chances. And yes it would be stupid to win the Best Play Tony and then close a week later.
^ Isn't that what RED did?
Was just going to say the same thing AC126748.
But also if it is the best play wdwfreak why shouldn't it win even if it does close? You make the argument for all the producers who open their shows the last two weeks prior to the Tony nominations.
the demand has been softening and the grosses sliding for a while now. It's run its course, and recasting is unlikely to meaningfully juice them up that much. Bear in mind that star casting has a significant cost, and the Booth doesn't offer a lot of upside.
The difference was that season it was Red vs Next Fall, and a generally poor season for plays overall, and Next Fall isn't the like a Pulitzer Prize winner, Clyborne Park, or an immaginitvely amazing production, Peter and the Starcatcher, or have star making performances, Venus in Fur.
It was clear that Red was the frontrunner, by a long shot, with Other Desert Cities the race is extremly neck and neck, and all the productions are looking for that Nose ( win by a nose) to get them accross the finish line first. For Clyborne Park it the Pulitzer, for Peter its the touring possibilities (Its this seasons War Horse not the strongest play but best production by far), with Venus in Fur in the Next Fall position.
Any little thing that can get the show an edge (no not the one that wrote spiderman) in the voters mind and closing a week after the Tonys is most certainly not one.

It has had a very good run for a play, wonder what's next for the Booth?

Looks like the rumours of Mamma Mia! moving to the Ambassador are true with Matilda taking the Winter Garden, Riedel said Matilda would go to a Shubert theatre and other than The Shubert, The Winter Garden seems the most logical theatre given the other Shubert theatres aren't that big and the Imperial won't be free for a while.
After Riedels last editorial i have a feeling Matilda is going to be treated like Aida. If anything remotely close to its "apparent greatness" opens next season, it will win the tony over it, because even though the shuberts have more theaters, everyone knows you don't F*CK with the Neaderlanders, which is what RSC did and its going to bite Matilda in her telekenetic ass.

I think that if OTHER DESERT CITIES must close, then the theatre switcharound is a great idea. CHICAGO will fit like a glove in the Booth and MAMMA MIA! should be a pretty good fit for the Ambassador in terms of where it is right now gross-wise. And I think the Winter Garden would be terrific for MATILDA. If MAMMA MIA! does in fact take the Ambassador, though, I would hope a refurbishment would happen first.

Chicago won't go into The Booth, there aren't enough dressing rooms for everyone. The next show in the Booth is Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
YAY!! I am happy about this because i didnt want the booth to be lost to a show running on fumes, small shows need a chance, butthen again the whole Matilda switcharroo wouldnt happen till Jan so it is still possible.

Matilda isn't coming until the Spring anyway. I still think Mamma Mia! could stay put at the Winter Garden and Matilda replaces Memphis at the Shubert.
Thats what im hoping for especially for their recent resurgence.
If ODC doesn't announce its impending closing and wins any Tonys (and I feel it's bound to walk away with at least one), it loses out on the potential business from the wins.
If it does announce its closing, it may sour Tony voters, who have a tendency to vote for shows that are still open.
Double-edged sword.
It HAS been announced. Look at the third post. No games being played here.
It's both comforting and disheartening to be reminded that the best play of the season may not actually win the Tony Awards for Best Play. Comforting, because it is a reminder that winning the award isn't irrefutable evidence of a show's quality; disheartening, because the uncynical part of me still wants to believe that it is merit that earns a show an award.
Ah, life...
you guys are right. it would be so stupid for a play to win best play just because it actually deserved it. jesus christ.
