"ANYONE can open a blog and call themselves a critic."
Isn't there a certain CORNER that tries that?
As it happens, I was sitting next to a very knowledgeable NY theatre fan during the March 16th 8p.m. showing of Priscilla. He pointed out a slender gentleman as the theatre critic Isherwood. Is it pretty much him and Brantley as the two critics who have the biggest influence? RC in Austin, Texas
Reidel will be interesting as he saw it about a month after it originally opened in Sydney.
Riedel isn't a critic; he's a columnist. He doesn't review shows.

And yet, on NPR's Studio 360 this week, he was called a theater critic and he did not correct the host.

Best line:
Needless to say, the show is campier than a tentful of Boy Scouts (working on their choreography merit badge).
The EW really to put in two thin plot mentions? "thin road-trip yarn" and "nylon-thin plot"...hmph
Chicago Tribune calls Priscilla a "far from revelatory but irresistibly enjoyable and big-hearted confection."
We three queens: Divas take a musical road trip
"a couple of shameless scene-stealers: Keala Settle as a mullet-haired bar owner with a private yearning for passion"
I'm so proud of her!!!!

Did EW confuse Jessica Philips character with Ashley Spencers?
I also thought it was Jessica Phillips playing Will Swenson's wife.
Isherwood is up. Doesn't look great. Very positive for Sheldon, but that's about it.
“Priscilla” feels monotonous and mechanical. It lacks the narrative complexity of “La Cage” (egad, did I just write those words?) and isn’t as impishly clever as guilty-pleasure indulgences like “Mamma Mia!” and “Xanadu,” similarly ditzy musicals inviting audiences to take a mindless boogie down memory lane.

Isherwood frankly prides himself on being in the minority about mainstream entertainment.

WAIT... THAT'S ME !!!!!!
On DidHeLikeIt.com: The Unofficial Ben Brantley vs. The World aggregator, 3/5 were positive in their reviews, with 2 at the polar opposite end.
DId He Like It?
Isherwood, for the most part, hit the nail on the head for me.
At first I was not crazy about the lip-synching but then I realized what they were doing. A lot of drag queens lip-synch and I really think that was executed well with the Diva's doing the singing. So I don't agree with the negative comments about the lip-synching.

And yet, Kyle4, one thing remains unchanged: no one cares. Those who liked the show will continue to like it. Those who didn't, likewise.

"Probably a few inconceivable surfaces have been accessorized with equally exotic detail, but I hesitate to inquire."
Why is he revealing his fantasies in this way? Who are these buffoons who write these sorts of things nowadways and have their editors all been the victims of budget cuts?
I think the rave in the Philadelphia Inquirer sums it up for me:
"Priscilla is so sound, so right, and after seeing it, I can't imagine it any other way. Just give yourself over to its giddy theatrical turns. It is, after all, about acceptance."
Just came from the opening. Saw in London last year, but I have to say the Broadway production is even better! Cast is super slick and the show was fabulous.
** Plus, I love the fact that the Opening Night Playbill is actually "SEQUIN"NED...(Take that Isherwood!)
As much as I was surprised (again) at how much fun the show is, I do hope this can do well with the tri-state and tourist audience....We'll soon see. Congrats to the cast and crew on a great opening!

It is what it is -- an excuse to provide some eye-catching musical numbers as it goes through its rudimentary "book." Take it as that and you'll have a good time; start looking for Chicago or The King and I and you wil not like it. A great show? No. An entertaining one, absolutely.
Why do I get the feeling you're an a-hole if you have a less-than-favorable opinion about this show?
So some people don't like it. Boohoo.
