PROMISES, PROMISES Revival CD Review#1

Posted: 6/28/10 at 8:02pm

I thought the orchestrations was very easy on the ears and enjoyable to listen to. Kristin Chenoweth is, as always, in fine form as Fran. Sean Hayes, however, it sounds like he switches between Jack McFarland and Jerry Orbach frequently throughout the songs. His version of "Promises, Promises" though, made me cry since the man is obviously using vibrato a bit too liberally...Other than that, I rate this an 8/10.

His vibratto is worse live...regardless of that little issue, I think he should've won the Tony for best actor. His singing is just ok, but his stage presence, timing and acting were superb.
I love this CD! I think it's a 9/10.

I'd definitely agree. I think there are a few times where Kristin slips into "fierce singing" mode, and the sound becomes a bit too modern, but I think she is the highlight of the recording for sure. Sean is adorable, but... omg, that vibrato! It sounds like he's trying to justify his vocal chops and very presence as a singer on the recording (which pretty much sums up how I feel about Catherine Zeta-Jones on the Night Music recording... and live). I wish he'd ease up a bit and just sing because he has a very nice voice.

Overall, the orchestrations are nice and bright, I think you get an excellent feel for the show and (rather surprisingly), I think they found nice moments for the interpolations and that they work very well on the disc. Unfortunately, some of the original songs just have that... zZzZzZz factor.

7/10

I love Kristin, but she sounds a little too nasal at times in the recording and the same thing live.

For the record, I'm judging based on the recording solely since I have not seen the show (and don't plan on it, since my friends who saw were unanimous in their disdain for it).

You're insane for missing the best show on Broadway. Plus seeing Megan Sikora in the number Turkey Lurkey Time is worth the ticket price alone.
AND Tony Goldwyn as Sheldrake!

I ordered the CD and it arrived a few days ago. I listened to the CD and all songs were good. Sean did a fine job too and he really should have won the Tony for his performace as Chuck Baxter. He did not come across as Jack McFarland at all or Jerry Orbach either. He did all songs very well.
I took Voice in college so I have an ear and an understanding of vocals in Broadway shows and emphasis on the musicalities of words and melody.

Very well put together and the booklet insert was a really nice addition to the CD itself.

No, he does not come off like Jerry Orbach; for starters, Orbach had a voice that was worth listening to.

For seconders, Turkey Lurkey Time was very disappointing.

I love Kristin but find her voice to be very sharp and for the most part lacking emotion and warmth in this show and on this CD. I enjoyed watching and listening to her as she is a stellar performer, but I would agree with the critics and say she is not a good fit for the character or the music of this show.

She comes off better in duets with Sean like "You'll Think of Someone" and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again". Her best vocal to me is "Whoever You Are, I Love You". The emotion comes through and it emits warmth.

Am I the only one who has to turn down the volume when one of her solo songs come on?

My favorite vocal is Katie Finneran on "A Fact Can Be a Beautiful Thing". Does anyone know if there are any other cast albums or recording where I could hear more of Katie?

My disc didn't arrive until yesterday and although I have only heard it all the way through once, I like it. I can't wait to actually see the show tonight!

My favorite comment from this or any other thread, from LindaTNo1:

Linda, thank you for telling us how valid your opinions are. I'll bet you also took a wonderful Music Appreciation course in 2nd Grade, where you learned to hear the intricacies of the triangle and the recorder.

Are we shamelessly asking for downloads under the guise of "PMs" on the board now? I was under the impression that was a big no-no.

Fame, tune in to BWW radio and you will probably hear a lot of it. The other week they played the whole thing through about 4 times. That's how I heard it. I like it but still have to get used to Chenoweth singing these songs. There is just something off. Probably because I am so used to hearing Warwick and Vandross' versions.

I think this recording is fine. It doesn't really offer any reason to listen to it over the original (why would you listen to anybody but Jill O'Hara? and that's not so much a diss on Kristin as it is intense praise for O'Hara). The part of the new recording that makes my ears hurt is the pit voice soprano at the end of Turkey Lurkey Time; the big exposed high solo is SHARP.. like almost a half step sharp. I thought we had auto tune these days? It's painful!!! I can't listen to it.

I think it is a decent recording Kristin still comes across very cold and VERY NASAL I still dont understand why she is promoted as the BEST ..ahh well...she is looking more and more like Ertha Kitt when she has her hair back..
Sean surprised me..I really liked his Promises Promises number
not great but much better than Tony Roberts on the London cast not close to Jerry Orbach , who was so gifted,....I still like the orig Broadway best...Betty Buckley is good in the London cast but to shrilly at times and I love her voice usually.
blah blah blah blah I can go on cant I

For enders, both Sean Hayes and Jerry Orbach have voices worth listening to.

Promises, Promises continues to sell out at the box office and that is a great sign of the show being very worthy and must-see Broadway!
